Planning to display your American flag for the Fourth? Do it right. Basic respect is the key, according to Mike Darlington, commander of American Legion Post 354 in Bon Air. “The flag should be serviceable,“ Darlington said. “It shouldn’t be faded, torn or tattered. If it’s worn out, go ahead and replace it.“ If you leave the flag flying at night, it should be illuminated, Darlington said. If not, it should be taken indoors.

Three have swine flu at Chesterfield juvenile correctional facility  06/04/09 12:01 AM

Eleven residents of Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center in Chesterfield County have been isolated in housing on the campus after three were diagnosed with the H1N1 swine-flu virus. Two others with flulike symptoms, one of them with an underlying health issue, are receiving care in a central infirmary on the campus, said a spokesman for the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice, which operates the facility.

At just less than 3 acres, Patricia Stansbury’s tiny farm is hidden just over the Richmond city line near Bon Air. With row crops and egg-laying hens, Epic Gardens has been Stansbury’s livelihood for the past 10 years. “It is basically my only income,“ she said. Stansbury spent a large portion of her previous career life in natural foods, managing food stores and co-ops, before deciding to trade her “big house and little yard” in Westover Hills “for a little house and big yard.“

Training center undergoing expansion  03/29/09 12:01 AM

Construction is under way on the expansion of a Department of Juvenile Justice training center in Chesterfield County. The 5,400-square-foot addition to the Cedar Lodge Training Facility, which is the primary training center for the Department of Juvenile Justice, will include a multi-purpose room to provide more training space for officers, said Bruce Twyman, a department spokesman.

Bon Air gardener will be on HGTV  01/21/09 12:01 AM

Local gardener Norie Burnet and her Bon Air garden, Eden Woods, will be featured on a rebroadcast of “A Gardener’s Diary,“ tomorrow at 7 a.m. on HGTV. The episode, “Mad About Moss,“ details what happened when Burnet quit maintaining a lawn and let moss take over the shady yard. Erica Glasener is the host of the show. Eden Woods has been featured in The Times-Dispatch and many magazines.
