Caroline To help compensate for a $2.7 million shortfall in budget projections, the Caroline County Board of Supervisors has asked for 15 percent cuts in most county operations. The cuts will include schools, but not at the full 15 percent rate because that would push the county below the state’s minimum level of school funding. An exact cut in school funding is still under discussion. The county has also imposed a hiring freeze and is prepared to put off capital purchases until after 2010.

3 Virginians die of car-crash injuries  11/20/08 12:01 AM

A Manassas man died of injuries he suffered in a single-car crash in Fairfax County yesterday, Virginia State Police said. Roberto Rivas, 28, was traveling north on Sully Road, south of McLearen Road, at 3:04 a.m. when his vehicle struck a guardrail, ejecting Rivas. He was not wearing a seat belt, police said. Also:

  • Russell Crowder Bedford, 90, of the 5700 block of Jahnke Road in Richmond died Nov. 9 at VCU Medical Center of injuries he suffered in a three-vehicle crash on Nov. 4. Police said Bedford’s car was struck by a pickup as he pulled out of Pineway Drive onto Forest Hill Avenue and then was struck by another car. He was wearing a seat belt, police said.
