Football: No. 5 Highland Springs 46, Armstrong 8  10/30/09 11:28 PM

Wyatt Johnson hauled in a pair of scoring catches and John Thompson rumbled for two more touchdowns as No. 5 Highland Springs coasted to a Capital District victory. Johnson caught three passes for 80 yards. Thompson rushed six times for 70 yards to help the Springers climb to 4-0 in the district and 7-1 overall. Derrick Hopkins and Gevonn Young returned fumbles for touchdowns in Highland Springs’ 35-point first period.

Football: Hanover 28, Atlee 7  10/30/09 10:00 PM

Sam Rogers passed for 106 yards on 17 attempts and a TD, and was 7 of 16 for 92 yards and a score and the Hawks defeated the Raiders in a Capital District meeting. Dean Cheatham totaled 154 yards rushing on 21 attempts with a touchdown for Hanover (2-2, 5-3). Josh Doggett paced the defense for Atlee (2-2, 5-3) with 17 tackles, five assists and one sack. David Ratchford finished with eight punts for 299 yards, a touchback and two inside the 20.

Football: Atlee 33, Armstrong 8  10/23/09 11:36 PM

C.J. Watkins rushed for 189 yards on 10 carries and set an Atlee school record for longest run from scrimmage with a 92-yard TD in the Raiders’ Capital District road victory at Armstrong. Watkins also scored on runs of 10 and 5 yards. Quarterback Drew Ferguson threw a 13-yard TD pass to fellow quarterback Dylan Garthright and ran 2 yards for another score.

Football: Varina 42, Henrico 7  10/23/09 11:02 PM

Varina’s Tre Johnson’s 95-yard touchdown run was part of his 292 yard output against Henrico. Johnson also scored three times as the Blue Devils improved to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the Capital District. De’Chavon Hayes had three carries for 66 yards and score. The Blue Devils were paced on defense by Addonis Robinson’s 11 tackles and a sack, Nick Taylor’s seven tackles and Dondrey Pegeas’ two interceptions and two tackles.

Football: Midlothian 30, Armstrong 14  10/16/09 10:24 PM

Jimmy Whitten threw two touchdown passes and the Trojans defeated the Wildcats in a nondistrict matchup. Whitten finished 4 for 5 for 44 yards, Nate Hines made 23 carries for 106 yards and a TD and Mitchell Perierra had 20 carries for 146 yards for Midlothian (1-5). Malcolm Cook paced Armstrong (1-5) with 9 carries for 76 yards and a score. He also was 4 for 11 for 83 yards and a touchdown. Tyee Williams carried nine times for 54 yards, and ran in a 51-yard score from Cook.

No. 5 Highland Springs rushed the ball 28 times for 204 yards en route to a win over Henrico. Springer running back John Thompson carred the ball 11 times for 151 yards and 2 TDs. Teammate John Saunders carried it eight times for 77 yards and a touchdown. Henrico’s Brinton Hill had 4.5 tackles, a sack, and three tackles for loss. Highland Springs’ Gevonn Young had 4.5 tackles for the Springers.
