Scouts rule out Rockbridge for Jamboree
The Boy Scouts of America decided yesterday that it won’t be bringing its national jamboree to Rockbridge County and is turning its attention instead to a possible site in West Virginia. Jack Furst, a national Boy Scout chairman, said the Goshen site was “spectacularly beautiful,“ but “it came down to land use and economics. It just won’t work.“

Injured Caroline girl had jumped on SUV
An 11-year-old Caroline County girl found seriously injured Sunday on a Lake Caroline community street had jumped onto the back of a passing sport utility vehicle unbeknownst to the driver, state police have concluded. “Basically, the driver is not at fault,“ said Sgt. Thomas Molnar, a state police spokesman. “The driver drove down the road, and she fell off the vehicle” without his knowledge about 6:35 p.m., near the intersection of Loyalist and Senate drives in Lake Caroline.

Officials investigating how 11-year-old girl found in Caroline was injured
CAROLINE—An 11-year-old girl was transported to VCU Medical Center last night with serious injuries. Virginia State Police are asking for the community’s assistance in learning what happened. State Police were dispatched around 6:35 p.m. to investigate an incident that occurred in the area of Loyalist and Senate drives in the Lake Caroline community. Upon arrival, crews found the 11-year-old girl.

Tennessee firm drops fair plan
The Tennessee company that had hoped to run a 10-day fair at the Richmond Raceway Complex next month has canceled its plans. The company, Fair Nation Inc., and Henrico County couldn’t agree on a security plan, company manager Philip Downing said yesterday. He called Henrico’s demands unreasonable but would not elaborate. “The people at RIR were great; really, everybody in Richmond was very courteous and professional, even the people we disagreed with,“ Downing said.

Richmond police officers hurt at firing range
Two Richmond police officers were hit by shrapnel yesterday during target practice at the department’s outdoor firing range in Caroline County, but the injuries were not serious, authorities said. The officers were treated for “very minor injuries,“ according to Sgt. Ron Brown, a department spokesman. Brown said the officers were struck by a bullet fragment when a round ricocheted from a pole and struck them during close-proximity shooting drills.

Richmond jail to start charging inmates $1 a day
Richmond’s overcrowded city jail will start charging inmates $1 day to be there. The charge takes effect Wednesday, said Lt. Col. Walter Allmon of the city sheriff’s department. “It’s to help pay for the cost of operating the jail,“ he said. It costs about $46 per inmate, per day to cover the jail’s operating and administrative costs, city budget documents show. The $1-a-day charge could raise more than $500,000 a year toward the $30 million annual cost of running the jail.

Richmond’s First Market Bank, Union Bankshares of Caroline to merge
First Market Bank is hooking up with a bigger state bank, creating the largest Virginia-based financial institution. First Market Bank, mostly owned by Ukrop’s Super Markets Inc., said yesterday that it plans to join Union Bankshares Corp. in Bowling Green in a deal valued at $105 million.

Caroline County man charged with assaulting deputies
Four Caroline County sheriff’s deputies were assaulted in a courtroom yesterday about 12:50 p.m., authorities said. Stacy J. St. Julian, 39, of Woodford was being tried on a domestic-assault charge in Caroline Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. After he was convicted and sentenced, St. Julian became violent when being led from the courtroom, according to a news release from Caroline Sheriff A.A. “Tony” Lippa Jr. When deputies attempted to place him into custody, he struck several of them, authorities said.

Caroline County recognized for economic development
Caroline County received the Community Economic Development Award (CEDA) from the Virginia Economic Developers Association at its spring conference in Williamsburg on March 13. This is the second time in three years Caroline has won the CEDA Award. Caroline won the CEDA in competition with other Virginia communities with populations from 15,000-40,000. Caroline has a population of about 26,000.
