Football: No. 4 Thomas Dale 21, Matoaca 14
After a scoreless first half, Thomas Dale outscored Matoaca three touchdowns to two in the second to win the Central District championship and advance to the Central Region Division 6 playoffs for the first time since 2002. Matoaca recovered two Thomas Dale fumbles in the first quarter, and the Knights covered a Warriors fumble as the defenses ruled.
Football: Colonial Heights 13, Hopewell 7 (OT)
Derek Mears connected with Brandon Brown for a 17-yard score with less than 2 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime, and Colonial Heights defeated Hopewell in a Central District matchup. Tyler Drewes finished with 18 carries for 114 yards for the Colonials (1-5, 3-6). Jonathan Frink put the Blue Devils (1-5, 2-7) on the board, catching a 10-yard pass from Jonavas Rhone for a TD.
Football: No. 5 Meadowbrook 28, Petersburg 18
Andre Coble accounted for 329 yards and two touchdowns and Domico Phillips scored twice to lead the Monarchs (6-1 Central, 9-1) past the visiting the Crimson Wave (3-4, 5-5). Coble rushed for 172 yards and a TD on 13 carries and completed 10 of 15 passes for 157 yards and a score. Phillips finished with 20 carries for 93 yards. Petersburg quarterback Kevin Green completed 18 of 28 passes for 309 yards and three TDs. Damon McLaughlin had four catches for 141 yards and two scores and Demonte Gregory grabbed a 65-yard scoring strike.
Football: Dinwiddie 54, Prince George 0
Deandre Allen had 14 rushes for 124 yards and two TDs as Dinwiddie (4-3, 6-4) swamped Prince George (0-7, 1-9). Quarterback Chris Hall was 11 for 20 for 199 yards and two TDs and Drakar Harvell had four catches for 121 yards and a TD. Defensively, Corey Marshall had nine tackles (three for loss) and two sacks. Most prep football rescheduled for Monday
Soggy fields have pushed the final night of regular-season high school football in the Central Region to Monday. The most anticipated game, Varina at Highland Springs, will be played today at 1 p.m. at Highland Springs. The winner earns the Capital District title and a berth in the region Division 6 playoffs. The loser misses the playoffs. Already on today’s schedule are the VISFA Division I playoff game between Collegiate and Fork Union at Collegiate (1:30) and the traditional closer between Thomas Jefferson and John Marshall (1). It’s homecoming at John Marshall. Also, King William will play at King and Queen today at 7 p.m.

Football: Hopewell 20, Prince George 17
Devonte Ennis ran for 67 yards and three scores and the Blue Devils held on to beat the Royals for their first Central District win. Jalen Reeves was 9 for 20 for 145 yards to help lead Hopewell (1-5, 2-7) from a 10-0 deficit. Lawrence Taylor led Prince George (0-6, 1-8) with 121 yards passing, 99 yards rushing and a touchdown. The Royals’ chances for victory were damaged by a bad snap on a field goal attempt late in the contest.
Football: Petersburg 49, Colonial Heights 0
Kevin Green finished 10 for 19 for 324 yards and four touchdowns to power the Crimson Wave over the Colonials in a Central District matchup. Keith Johnson totaled 190 yards receiving and four TDs for Petersburg (2-3, 4-4), whose defense held Colonial Heights (1-4, 3-5) to just four first downs enitre game. Anthony Johnson made 11 tackles, Jamal Young had 12 tackles and a sack, Ray Procise added 10 tackles, 1½ sacks and Elton Briggs contributed nine tackles, a sack and a tipped pass for the Wave.
Football: Matoaca 27, Dinwiddie 19
Daquan Turner rushed for 172 yards and a TD on 35 carries as Matoaca (5-1 Central, 5-4) defeated Dinwiddie (3-3, 5-4) in a back-and-forth game. Benjamin Smith had five receptions for 80 yards and two TDs. For Dinwiddie, QB Chris Hall was 15 for 24 for 249 yards and three TDs. Trey Gardner had five receptions for 112 yards and two TDs.
No margin for error in Division 6
You’ve heard this before. “We know every year we have to win the district in order to go to the playoffs in Division 6, so every district game becomes critical,“ said Hermitage coach Patrick Kane. Thomas Dale coach Vic Williams said after the Knights defeated district foe Dinwiddie: “We’re in a playoff game every week.“ L.C. Bird coach David Bedwell refers to the games preceding the start of district play as “preseason.“

Girls volleyball: Prince George 3, Matoaca 0
No. 3 Prince George swept No. 2 Matoaca to advance to tomorrow’s Central District final. For the Royals, Jorden Lykes led with 17 kills, Brittany Johnson had 11 kills, 6 digs and 4 aces, Danielle Perry had 17 assists, and Sarah Ham added 6 kills, 4 digs and 2 aces. Football: Petersburg 37, Prince George 15
Down 15-0, Petersburg (2-3 Central, 4-4) scored five unanswered touchdowns to beat Prince George (0-5, 1-7). Petersburg’s Kevin Green rushed for 164 yards on 13 carries and threw 214 yards on a 12-for-23 passing effort. He threw for two touchdowns. Petersburg’s Jamal Young had four solo tackles, assisted on five more, and forced a fumble.
Football: Dinwiddie 45, Hopewell 14
Chris Hall threw for 251 yards and four touchdowns to help Dinwiddie defeat Hopewell, 45-14. Drakar Harvell had six grabs for 97 yards and three scores for the Generals as they improved to 5-3 overall and 3-3 in the Central District. The Blue Devils was led by Jalen Reeves who rushed for 134 yards on 16 carries who fell to 1-7 overall and 0-6 in the District.
