Football: Colonial Heights 26, Prince George 21  10/09/09 11:14 PM

Mark Negron-Boyle and the Colonial Heights’ defense mounted a one-foot goal-line stand in the fourth as time expired to help the Colonials notch a Central District win. Tyler Drewes worked 30 carries for 194 yards and TD, and Brandon Brown returned a pick 55 yards for a score for Colonial Heights (1-1, 3-2). Lawrence Taylor passed for two TDs for the Royals (0-2, 1-4).

Demitrius Campbell threw for a 34-yard TD and ran for a 2-yard score as the Knights held off the Blue Devils. Campbell finished 10 for 14 for 150 yards and an interception for Thomas Dale (2-0 Central, 3-2), Mike Edmunds (12 carries, 74 yards) ran for scores of 9 and 2 yards, and Brandon Burton made six catches for 100 yards. Jaylen Reeves put Hopewell (0-2, 1-4) on the board with a 2-yard run in the first quarter, and Quantae Gholson connected with Trashaun Smith on a 7-yard touchdown.

Coble leads Monarchs into showdown with Dinwiddie

Andre Coble learned the nuances of the spread offense during a sojourn in California. When senior quarterback Andre Coble walks down the halls of Meadowbrook High School, everyone seems to know who he is. On the football field, he’s the linchpin of the mighty Monarchs offense, which averages 37.5 points per game. “We’re in this offense because of him,“ said first-year coach Troy Taylor, who was an assistant at Meadowbrook when Coble was a freshman and sophomore. “It’s best to get the ball in the hands of your best player.“

Chris Hall totaled 151-yards passing and added another 99 on the ground as No. 5 Dinwiddie (1-0 Central, 3-1) defeated Colonial Heights (0-1, 2-2) in a Central District showdown. Corey Marshall led a stingy Generals’ defense with two blocked passes, a blocked extra-point attempt, nine tackles and a sack. Tyler Drewes had 86 yards rushing and a TD for the Colonials.

Football: No. 9 Thomas Dale 34, Petersburg 14  10/02/09 10:38 PM

Demetrick Jackson rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown and added a second score on a third-period interception return to lead the No. 9 Knights past the Crimson Wave. Thomas Dale (1-0 Central District, 2-2) unleashed a ground game for which the Wave had no answer. The winners carried 46 times for 235 yards. Nine players carried the ball for Thomas Dale.
