Woman arrested in Chesterfield County homicide  08/02/09 4:42 PM

Chesterfield police this morning arrested a 33-year-old woman just an hour after receiving a report of problems at an Old Plantation Road home off Jefferson Davis Avenue. Tina Lynn Campbell was being held without bond this afternoon in Chesterfield County jail. Police did not comment about what may have prompted an attack on Wayne Sidney Davis, 53. Campbell, whom police described as Davis’ girlfriend, was arrested at another residence in the 7000 block of Old Plantation.

Judge calls murder case ‘circumstantial’  07/30/09 12:00 AM

A Chesterfield County judge described three days of evidence in a complex murder case as “totally circumstantial” yesterday and said he likely will allow a jury to consider only two verdicts: innocent or guilty of first-degree murder. Circuit Judge Timothy J. Hauler made the unusually frank comments outside the jury’s hearing shortly after rejecting a defense argument to dismiss a first-degree murder charge against Albert L. Perry Jr.

Chesterfield County homicide investigators and the woman behind an escort service are expected to testify today in a murder trial that includes a mountain of evidence but no clear motive. On the second day of the trial yesterday, a three-man, nine-woman jury listened to a recording of a rambling account by defendant Albert L. Perry Jr. that was consistent only in his pleas of innocence.

A woman whose beauty, intellect and world travels were the pride of her family died on a filthy, cigarettelittered stairwell landing three years ago, a nylon stocking knotted around her neck. Yesterday, a three-man, nine-woman Chesterfield County jury was selected to determine whether Albert Lewis Perry Jr., now 27, was the person who ended the woman’s life in an early morning escort-service date gone wrong.

Henrico links suspect to as many as 40 break-ins  07/22/09 4:40 PM

Henrico County police said today they have arrested a Richmond man they believe was responsible for as many as 40 office break-ins dating back to February. In addition, Chesterfield County police have charged Cornelius Baker, 43, of the 1700 block of Peter Paul Boulevard in the city with two break-ins there. Henrico police spokesman Lt. Doug Perry said that Baker was followed by Henrico undercover agents July 1 when he was spotted trying to enter an office within the Boulders office complex off Midlothian Turnpike near the city line.

Missing Chesterfield County man died at crash site  07/05/09 7:02 PM

A Chesterfield County man missing since the early morning hours Friday was located this afternoon by friends and family where his motorcycle crashed in a fatal accident. Chesterfield authorities and State Police said that Ricky Viar, 31, was located by friends in a copse of trees off the Courthouse Road exit of eastbound Powhite Parkway. He was pronounced dead at the scene yesterday.

The Pi Rho Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. received four top honors, including the Graduate Achievement Award, during the 56th Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference held recently in Asheville, N.C. The chapter also was recognized for outstanding service to senior citizens, an anger-management workshop for young men and efforts to reactivate and reclaim sorority sisters in the community.

With the exception of Henrico, municipal governments in Central Virginia have been crafting budgets that are smaller in real terms than in previous years. Henrico’s budget is increasing by only 1 percent, and collectively area localities will spend 3 percent less in fiscal 2010 than in fiscal 2009.

Lisa P. Cole is the recipient of the 2009 Pamplin Leader Award at Lloyd C. Bird High School in Chesterfield County. The Pamplin Leader is a one-year $1,000 tuition scholarship to Virginia Tech. It is presented annually to a top student from each public high school in Virginia. It was established by Robert B. Pamplin Sr. (VT, Class of’33) and Robert B. Pamplin Jr. to recognize students for academic achievement, community service and leadership experience.

A man and woman whose bodies were discovered in a Chesterfield County apartment Saturday apparently died of drug overdoses, police said today. Authorities still are not identifying the man and woman found dead in the 7700 block of Bannockbarn Drive in the Chesterfield Village Apartments north of Midlothian Turnpike and west of Chippenham Parkway.
