Richmond City Council to consider roundabouts at four intersections

Richmond will consider building roundabouts at four intersections as controversy continues over one planned at the A.P. Hill Monument on North Side. The City Council is being asked to allow roundabouts at Belt Boulevard and Hull Street Road; Forest Hill Avenue and Roanoke Street in South Richmond; 25th Street at Fairmount Avenue and Nine Mile Road, and 23rd Street and Fairfield Avenue in the East End.

New GRTC board member Hill-Christian to also help with city study  10/19/09 12:01 AM

Former Richmond Chief Administrative Officer Sheila Hill-Christian’s work for the city won’t end with her recent appointment to the GRTC Transit System board. She’s also partnering with a Texas-based consultant on an economic-development study for the city. TIP Strategies of Austin tapped Hill-Christian as a subcontractor to conduct interviews with local officials and business owners and to organize focus groups, she said.

Richmond’s social-services agency overbilled nearly $4 million to state  08/22/09 12:01 AM

Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones announced yesterday plans to correct “major financial management failures” in the city’s Department of Social Services after the discovery of an estimated $3.8 million overbilling to the state. “We have no evidence that any of this is based in fraud or corruption, but rather poor management and record keeping which indicates a need to make significant procedural changes and improve the department’s operations,“ Chief Administrative Officer Byron C. Marshall said in a statement.

Ordinance would block roundabout at A.P. Hill Monument  06/21/09 12:01 AM

Richmond may have to come up with another way to improve traffic safety and flow around the A.P. Hill Monument on the city’s North Side. Officials have accepted a state grant that would allow the Laburnum Avenue-Hermitage Road intersection to be converted into a two-lane roundabout, which would be designed to reduce speeds from 35 to 40 mph to 18 to 23 mph.

Jones looks to tighten Richmond policy on take-home cars for officers

Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones said yesterday that he’s committed to tightening a policy that allows police officers to drive their vehicles home even if they live well outside the city limits. City Council members blasted the policy as excessive after learning this week that take-home vehicles have been authorized for officers who live as far out as Fredericksburg, Jetersville and Bumpass.

Richmond officials aren’t ready to go to bat for a ballpark in Shockoe Bottom, but they are supporting state legislation that could help get it built. With a show of hands, a majority of the Richmond City Council signaled yesterday its support for bills introduced by Del. G. Manoli Loupassi, R-Richmond, and Sen. A. Donald McEachin, D-Henrico.

Virginia Commonwealth University’s swelling enrollment could help attract development to Richmond’s North Side. A Georgia-based company is proposing to build a 192-unit apartment complex along Chamberlayne Avenue that would be geared for students at VCU and Virginia Union University. The gated complex would be built on 11 acres east of Chamberlayne, just north of its interchange with Interstates 95 and 64, between Mitchell and Bacon streets. The industrially zoned property includes the vacated, fenced-off remains of the Usry mobile-home court.

Council delays vote on pension raises  11/25/08 12:01 AM

Richmond city government retirees will have to wait a little longer to find out whether they’ll get a raise in their pensions, but it could be worth their while. The City Council postponed last night’s scheduled vote on a proposed 1 percent cost-of-living increase for retirees and discussed taking up the matter in January, after Mayor-elect Dwight Clinton Jones takes office. Jones supported a raise for retirees during the fall campaign and reiterated that position in general terms yesterday.
