Best Buy profits fall 23 percent in quarter
Consumers snapped up surprising numbers of flat-screen TVs, laptops, digital cameras and cell phones from Best Buy during its fourth quarter even as rival Circuit City was in bankruptcy and began liquidating its stores. The purchases helped Best Buy Co. Inc. boost sales by 10 percent, the company reported yesterday. Henrico County-based Circuit City Stores Inc. announced Jan. 16 that it would shut down and liquidate its stores. Its last store closed March 8.

Circuit City Stores Inc. got court approval today to sell off its Canadian operations as word came that the company faces a class-action lawsuit by lawyers claiming some laid-off employees were not paid federally mandated WARN Act payments. The lawsuit, filed by the New York-based law firm Kantrowitz Goldhamer & Graifman PC, claims the failed Henrico County company violated federal law by not giving enough notice to employees it terminated and who were subsequently not paid.

The hearing before the House Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law was postponed because of weather. The hearing has not been rescheduled. The subcommittee is looking into how changes to federal bankruptcy law in 2005 have affected the abilities of companies to restructure and emerge from bankruptcy protection.
