Circuit City selling Canadian stores to Bell Canada  03/02/09 6:04 PM

Circuit City Stores Inc. has found a buyer for its Canadian operations that will keep it operating. Henrico County-based Circuit City is selling The Source by Circuit City stores across Canada to Bell Canada. InterTAN Canada Ltd., which Circuit City bought in 2004, operates more than 750 The Source stores. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Congressional committee to discuss Circuit City postponed  03/02/09 4:48 PM

Officials at Circuit City Stores Inc. won’t be testifying before a house judiciary panel tomorrow morning. The hearing has been canceled because of weather. No new date has been set. The hearing before the House Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law was called so the committee could look into how changes to federal bankruptcy law in 2005 have affected the abilities of companies to restructure and emerge from bankruptcy protection.

But the amount is about $600,000 less than the Henrico County-based retailer originally had sought. A key reason: James A. Marcum, the chain’s vice chairman and acting president and chief executive, took himself off the list of 16 top executives who would have split some of the bonus money.

Best Buy Co. Inc. said yesterday that 250 workers at its corporate headquarters in suburban Minneapolis would lose their current jobs as the electronics chain pares its work force, though most might get new positions with the company. The company hoped the displaced employees would fill 210 new jobs being posted by the retailer, for a net loss of 40 jobs.

A bankruptcy court judge has allowed Circuit City Stores Inc. to hire Liquid Asset Partners LLC to sell off furniture, fixtures and equipment at the chain’s distribution, call and service centers and one of its corporate headquarters buildings. Judge Kevin R. Huennekens approved the motion after at least two firms bid for the contract. The bidding process took place during an auction at Circuit City’s Henrico County headquarters yesterday.

Circuit City Stores Inc. asked a bankruptcy court judge this morning to put off hearing a motion on who will sell furniture, fixtures and equipment at the chain’s distribution, call and service centers and one of its corporate headquarters buildings. Gregg M. Galardi, Circuit City’s bankruptcy attorney, told the Judge Kevin R. Huennekens that there were several companies interested in bidding for the right to sell the items.

Circuit City Stores Inc. can sell or break leases at its stores, distribution centers and offices, a bankruptcy judge ruled yesterday. The auctioning of the leases will proceed on two tracks, depending on when the chain’s stores close. The Henrico County-based retailer filed for bankruptcy in November. After failing to find a buyer or capital to keep operating, the company decided last month to liquidate its stores and lay off 34,000 employees.

Three weeks after Circuit City Stores Inc. announced it would liquidate its inventory and shut down, the electronics chain’s stores around the Richmond area still have plenty of merchandise as customers say they are waiting for the right moment to pounce. “Well, the deals seem OK, but I think if I wait a little longer I can get a much better price,“ Martin Kramer of eastern Henrico County said yesterday.

Circuit City offers help

In a twist to recent news about job losses, employers went looking for employees yesterday at Circuit City. The Henrico County chain held a job fair with about 80 employers at its corporate headquarters yesterday to help nearly 1,500 former employees find work.
