Circuit City Stores Inc. revealed discounted pricing at the 155 stores it is closing. The company would not disclose how much the discounts were, but one analyst reported 10 percent discounts on all products except Bose items at the Manhattan store that will close. An employee at the Charlottesville store that will close said it had the same discount.

Trying to stay afloat in a difficult retail environment, Circuit City Stores Inc. announced yesterday that it will shut 21 percent of its U.S. stores and lay off thousands of employees while dealing with vendors reluctant to extend credit. The consumer electronics retailer has been struggling for years, but recent financial turmoil has complicated its efforts to restructure its business and raised the specter of bankruptcy.

Circuit City Stores Inc. will announce today that it will close some of its stores, store employees told the Richmond Times-Dispatch yesterday. Employees at some stores were notified yesterday morning that their stores will close. A letter was distributed to employees at a Circuit City store in Douglasville, Ga., west of Atlanta, informing them that the store will permanently close by the end of the year and that they will lose their jobs.

Bernard Sands, a credit reporting company that advises manufacturers whether to ship goods to retailers, has pulled it recommendation from Circuit City Stores Inc. after the company reported last week $239 million in losses for the second quarter. The recommendation was pulled because of concerns that the retailer might not be able to pay vendors.

After a tumultuous week in which Circuit City Stores Inc. saw its top executive quit and its stock sink to a 44-year low, the company will announce its second-quarter earnings Monday. The Henrico County-based electronics retailer announced this week it was expecting to post losses of between $175 million and $185 million, better than it originally expected. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expect Circuit City to post a loss of $1.04 per share on revenue of $2.53 billion.

Philip J. Schoonover’s departure as the top executive at Circuit City Stores Inc. could cost the retailer $1.8 million in severance, according to a law professor who is a former Security and Exchange Commission attorney. Schoonover quit the Henrico County-based consumer electronics retailer Monday after four years on the job. He was chairman, president and chief executive.

Top executive Philip J. Schoonover resigned yesterday, four months after he asked shareholders for more time to turn around Circuit City Stores Inc. He was replaced as acting president and CEO by James A. Marcum, a turnaround specialist who was hand-picked for the Circuit City board in June by a dissident shareholder. In a statement issued by the company, Schoonover, 48, agreed to step down from all his positions—president, chief executive and chairman of the board, effective immediately.
