Repairs on Richmond gravestones begins
Richmond city workers have begun restoring 40 to 50 gravestones in Oakwood Cemetery that were found vandalized this month. The knocked-over gravestones are mostly in the rear part of the East End cemetery, adjacent to the Confederate section. Three of the graves are those of Confederate veterans, according to Christie Everson, spokeswoman for the city Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services..
Fire damages Chimborazo home
Richmond firefighters battled for nearly two hours to extinguish an intense, two-alarm house fire in the city's East End yesterday. No one was injured in the blaze, which was reported at 11:11 a.m. in the 3500 block of East Clay Street in the Chimborazo neighborhood. Fire Lt. Keith Vida said the first units responding to the scene found heavy smoke and fire coming out of the third-floor attic area of the single-family home. They also found a man outside the home trying to put water on the fire with a garden hose.

Woody defends jail staff
An inmate who died while in the custody of Richmond City Jail refused to cooperate when jail staff members first asked about any medical issues, Sheriff Woody said.

Jail fails to notify family of inmate’s death
She collapsed after screaming for a half hour in a jail cell. She died minutes after arriving at the emergency room. It was days before her family learned of her death in Richmond City Jail.

Psychic Festival musters aid for African children
Henrico County resident Susan Gunn came because she wanted to contact her deceased mother. Massachusetts native Wendy Tocci simply thought it sounded interesting. Whatever the appeal, more than 800 Richmond-area residents attended the Psychic Festival held at The Shops at Willow Lawn yesterday. About 40 psychics, tarot-card readers, healers, astrologers and other alternative medicine practitioners from as far away as Colorado gave individual consultations for a small donation.

Money raised for dancer
A fundraising drive is under way for Wade Green, a 15-year-old who wants to be a dancer. He is also severely to profoundly deaf. For the past seven years, Green has been a member of the Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities' award-winning City Dance Theatre. His participation in the dance theater has helped him become an accomplished dancer, a national speaker and a scholastic standout.
