Charles City County civic leader Harmon White dies at 88  07/13/09 12:01 AM

When his daughter was in the eighth grade, Harmon White took her out of an all-black school in Ruthville in 1965 and enrolled her in nearby Charles City County School, which had integrated just the year before. “I didn’t understand why he was moving me. He said, ‘Trust me. It’s a good thing.‘ I didn’t want to go,“ said his daughter, Saundra Quiero of Hampton.

During the civil-rights and Vietnam War era, young Episcopal priest Fred Martin held two firm opinions: that segregation was wrong and that the Vietnam War was unjust. “When he saw something wrong, he spoke out. He fought his battles where he stood,“ said his wife of 48 years, Diane Sadler Martin. Not long after arriving to lead St. John’s Episcopal Church in Halifax, he delivered the baccalaureate sermon of the first integrated graduating class at Halifax County High School.

Why is he changing now? For political reasons, versus principle? Or was it political reasons then, principle now? If he had been standing up all along, like 16 members of the 435-seat House, in voting against all bailouts in the past year, maybe his party would have fared better and/or maybe bailout mania would not have become a way of life that appears to be here to stay, regardless of who’s getting rich from it, and whether in actuality the bailouts are doing any good.

Petersburg man raises money for King memorial

At noon yesterday, Carl Winfield stopped for a water break, still about 31 miles from Fredericksburg. Wearing hiking boots, a backpack and a heavy coat, the 60-year-old Petersburg man walked cheerfully—sometimes singing gospel hymns along U.S. 1 near Ashland. Along the way, he said, he stopped to rest and pray at a church, where a passer-by was so excited to hear what he was doing that she brought her two sons to meet him.
