A star off the court  01/24/10 12:01 AM

COLUMBUS, Ohio Mark Titus seldom even gets into a game for No.21 Ohio State. Incredibly, that hasn’t kept him from becoming one of the most popular and famous college basketball players in the nation. Titus’ blog, which has had more than 2.1 million visitors, is about not being a superstar or being worshipped at the age of 20. It’s about losing, getting little or no respect, learning and having fun—a microcosm of the college experience.

UR seeking more consistency from talented Justin Harper  01/22/10 12:01 AM

An NBA scout attended the University of Richmond’s game Wednesday night to evaluate a couple of players. Justin Harper was one of them, the scout confirmed in a pre-tipoff conversation. Harper, a 6-10 junior from Meadowbrook High, then demonstrated why. He scored 24 points, hit 4 of 5 from 3-point distance, got to the free throw line six times, grabbed six rebounds, dished out three assists, blocked three shots and made a steal. Harper’s 36 minutes couldn’t have been much better, though UR fell 71-59 to Charlotte.

Heading into tonight’s visit from Charlotte, the Spiders have played league games decided by 5, 7 and 4 points. The seven-point win was an overtime defeat of Massachusetts. Richmond’s only A-10 contest decided by more than seven points: a 12-point win at Duquesne, and that game was tied with 12:30 left.

UR’s Brothers moves into the mix  01/19/10 12:01 AM

TThree consecutive University of Richmond first-half possessions against La Salle on Saturday resulted in three buckets for freshman guard Darien Brothers. Boldness is not a problem for the Benedictine High graduate. “That’s always been my game. I try to attack the rim,“ said Brothers. He played a season-high 16 minutes in that 67-63 Spiders win, and they were solid: no turnovers, 3-of-4 shooting, an assist. This rates as a highly encouraging development for UR (3-1 A-10, 14-5), which plays Charlotte (2-1, 12-5) tomorrow night at the Robins Center.

Shot-blocking Garrett shooting for offensive expansion  01/16/10 12:01 AM

The University of Richmond’s basketball program attracted Darrius Garrett because Spiders’ coaches didn’t tell him how great he was. They illuminated areas in which he needed work, and promised improvement opportunity. Garrett collected a UR-record and Atlantic 10 Conference-record 14 blocks in a Wednesday win over Massachusetts. The volume is remarkable—“They kept shooting layups, and I kept taking the blocked shots,“ Garrett said of the determined Minutemen—but the 6-9, 210-pound sophomore has been deflating shooters for years. He led the state of Georgia in blocks as a high-school junior.

UR’s McDonald: indispensable man for all seasons  01/15/10 12:01 AM

While chatting with a friend, Rich McDonald watched University of Richmond basketball players warm up a half-hour before the start of Wednesday night’s game with visiting Massachusetts. “Sorry to interrupt,“ a man said to McDonald. “Is there any way I could get power strip?“ McDonald provided the power strip. The chat resumed, and another man approached McDonald, requesting access to a Robins Center room whose door was locked. McDonald picked out one of the 51 keys on the three rings he pulled from his right pants pocket.
