Collegiate girls, Fork Union boys take track titles
FORK UNION - Collegiate’s girls won their third consecutive League of Independent Schools indoor track and field championship, and Fork Union Prep captured its fifth Prep League boys title in six years yesterday at the Estes Athletic Center. The Cougars won six events and placed well in the other nine to amass 172 points. St. Catherine’s placed second in the LIS (148), and Trinity Episcopal (58) was third.

Collegiate girls, Fork Union boys take VIS titles
Collegiate’s girls captured their first Virginia Independent Schools indoor track and field championship, and Fork Union’s boys reclaimed the title in competition yesterday at the A.J. Bolling Field House at St. Christopher’s. The Cougars won just two events: the 3,200-meter relay (Chloe Coates, Courtney Chase, Kathleen Melnick, Janie O’Connor) in 10:05.18 and the 800 relay (Katherine Melson, Christine Thexton, Becca Martin, Austin Pruitt) in 1:50.28.

McGee spurs Collegiate into VIS, Division I final
Collegiate quarterback Jake McGee had a memorable afternoon yesterday in a Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division I semifinal. The 6-5 senior completed 21 of 36 passes for 406 yards and four touchdowns in leading the Cougars over Fork Union 35-13. He was also intercepted four times and sacked on six occasions. In addition, McGee scored one TD and bolted up the middle 32 yards for a key first down early in the fourth quarter. If that wasn’t enough, the left-hander was poked in the eye and had to sit out two plays in the third quarter.

McGee, Cougars best Saints
Jake McGee completed 22 of 28 pass attempts for 336 yards and threw for six TDs as Collegiate swamped St. Christopher’s 51-24. McGee also rushed four times for 37 yards and a touchdown. Russell Harper had six catches for 86 yards and a score. Alex Newsome had seven receptions for 142 yards and two TDs for the Cougars. Trei Kelley had 4 catches for 48 yards and one score.

Patton’s goal lifts Cougars to win
Patton’s early goal lifts Collegiate past Godwin in girls soccer Becky Patton scored so quickly that spectators at the Collegiate-Mills Godwin girls soccer game hardly had time to settle in their seats or get a comfortable lean against the fence. Patton plays for Collegiate, ranked No. 3 in the latest Times-Dispatch Top 10. She is a prolific scorer and was honored as the T-D girls athlete of the week for that skill.

Cadets blast Cougars
Collegiate’s collective response to its matinee visit to Benedictine required but two words: Oh, Brothers! Darien Brothers, Benedictine’s wiry senior guard, scored 29 points, 23 during an incandescent first half, to lead the Cadets to a 77-32 blowout yesterday afternoon. The game began at 5 p.m. to allow Collegiate forward Jake McGee to attend last night’s All-Metro football banquet.

Trinity Episcopal fells No. 10 Collegiate
The Collegiate Cougars girls basketball team has pulled out close-game victories four times this season. The Trinity Episcopal Titans turned the tables on the visiting Cougars, ranked No. 10 in The Times-Dispatch Top 10, last night. Trinity Episcopal rallied from an eight-point deficit at halftime, took the lead on a pair of free throws by Jennifer Smith with 57 seconds remaining and came away with a 42-38 League of Independent Schools victory. The loss was Collegiate’s first.

Patrick Corrigan scored eight of his 10 points in the third quarter as No. 7 Collegiate pulled away from visiting Woodberry Forest. Jake McGee led scoring with 32 points for the Cougars. Homestanding Trinity Episcopal used tough defense to overcome an 8-point halftime deficit and defeat No. 10 Collegiate in an League of Independent Schools matchup. Trinity’s Jillian Brown and Jordan Brown applied pressure on Collegiate’s perimeter players. When Collegiate was able to get the ball inside, Jennifer Smith made Collegiate’s Dominique Meeks work for every point. Meeks had scored 10 in the first half but managed just 5 in the second half.
