Long retiring as Patrick Henry football coach
Patrick Henry High School football coach Ray Long Jr. is retiring after 28 years as the Patriots head man. The Patriots have won 228 games during Long’s tenure, which makes him the winningest coach in the Central Region. Patrick Henry capped an undefeated 1994 season with the VHSL Division 5 state championship. The Patriots were state runners-up in 1996 and 2001.

Football: No. 8 J.R. Tucker 28, Deep Run 14
J.R. Tucker intercepted five Deep Run (4-3 Colonial, 5-5) passes en route to victory. The Tigers (6-1, 8-2) tied the school record for wins in a season, set in 1964, before the team played at the AAA level. Montre Carr has two interceptions, returning one for a TD. He also rushed for 50 yards on six carries. Tucker’s Jacob Bennett had 179 yards on 19 carries and one touchdown.
Mills Godwin 7, Douglas Freeman 6
Douglas Freeman had five possessions inside Mills Godwin’s 5 yard line, but only came away with six points as the Eagles came away with the one-point victory. Derek Whitaker rushed for 87 yards on 20 carries and a score as Mills Godwin ended the season at 4-3 in the Colonial and 5-5 overall. Mac Hudgins went 14-for-21 for 208 yards, a touchdown and an interception as the Rebels fell to 1-6 and 2-8.
Hermitage 24, Patrick Henry 3
Third-ranked Hermitage (6-0, 9-1) compiled 332 yards total offense and rolled to its third consecutive Colonial District championship. Quarterback Brendon Riddick completed 11 of 18 passes for 206 yards, two touchdowns and an interception . He also scored a rushing TD. Anthony Vieng (3 receptions, 101 yards) and Derek Britt caught the TD passes. Easton Gordon led the ground game with 114 yards on 14 carries. Linebackers Curtis Grant (12 tackles, sack) and Daryl Howell (eight tackles) and defensive back Brandon Rogers (four tackles, two interceptions) spearheaded the Panthers’ defense. Jayrin Waller rushed for 39 yards on 14 carries for Patrick Henry (3-4, 4-6), which finished under .500 for the first time since 1992.

Football: John Marshall 35, Thomas Jefferson 24
Type text of update here. Josiah Shelton had four touchdowns and 187 total yards to lead the Justices past the Vikings in the teams regular-season finale. Shelton completed two passes for 85 yards but both went for touchdowns to Akeem Brown. Shelton led the John Marshall (3-4 Colonial, 5-5) rushing attack with 102 yards on 16 carries.
Most prep football rescheduled for Monday
Soggy fields have pushed the final night of regular-season high school football in the Central Region to Monday. The most anticipated game, Varina at Highland Springs, will be played today at 1 p.m. at Highland Springs. The winner earns the Capital District title and a berth in the region Division 6 playoffs. The loser misses the playoffs. Already on today’s schedule are the VISFA Division I playoff game between Collegiate and Fork Union at Collegiate (1:30) and the traditional closer between Thomas Jefferson and John Marshall (1). It’s homecoming at John Marshall. Also, King William will play at King and Queen today at 7 p.m.

Football: Mills Godwin 24, Deep Run 16
Jordan Kocen had 11 tackles, a sack and returned an interception for a score as Mills Godwin (3-3, 4-5) defeated Deep Run (4-2, 5-4) in a Colonial District matchup. David Caravati tallied 15 tackles, forced a fumble, recovered a fumble and broke up a pass for the Eagles, and Dane Forlines was 4 of 10 passing for 105 yards. Deep Run’s Kenny Williams was 12 of 25 for 147 yards passing and two TDs, and Holden Bass hauled in seven catches for 96 yards and a score.
Football: No. 4 Hermitage 60, Thomas Jefferson 6
Brendan Riddick threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as the Panthers scored the last 53 points to stay unbeaten in the Colonial District by beating the Vikings. Easton Gordon (70 yards) hauled in a Riddick touchdown and rushed another one in for Hermitage (6-0, 8-1). Derrick Britt led all the receivers with 84 yards on five catches and Nick Yurchak and Desmond Williams each caught touchdown passes. Raynard Revels led the defensive effort with three tackels and a 10-yard interception return for a score.

Boys volleyball: Mills Godwin 3, Hermitage 0
Matt Boegner had six kills and seven digs and Aaron Rebuck contributed 16 assists in Mills Godwin’s sweep of Hermitage in the Colonial District tournament. The third-seeded Eagles advanced to the semifinals and will face second-seeded Maggie Walker Governor’s School in Wednesday semifinals at Mills Godwin. Hermitage 13 22 16

Cross Country: Colonial District Championsips
Clarissa Schick led four runners in the top 10 to help Maggie Walker Governor’s School edge past Deep Run for the girls title of the Colonial District Championship. Deep Run have three of the top four finishers including winner Erica Dobbs. Grant Pollock won the individual boys title to lead Mills Godwin to the team championship. Douglas Freeman finished second led by second and third-place finishers Silas Frantz and Will McPherson.

Two-way player Devonte Derricott rushed for 107 yards and a touchdown and got seven tackles as Patrick Henry defeated Douglas Freeman 29-19. The Patriots also got two touchdowns from Jayrin Waller as they improved to 3-5 overall and 3-2 in the Colonial. The Rebels (1-3; 2-6) was led by Eric Addison who rushed for 61 yards. Deep Run’s Kenny Williams passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another as he staged a spirited quarterback duel with Thomas Jefferson counterpart Marvin Robinson and led the Wildcats (4-1, 5-3) to a Colonial District win. Williams was 13 of 18 for 188 yards and TD tosses of 34 yards to Holden Bass and 11 to Wes Valentine (five catches, 62 yards). Dallas Simmons (19 carries, 81 yards, TD) paced the ground game,
