Wisconsin has suspended safeties Aubrey Pleasant and Shane Carter. Coach Bret Bielema did not say yesterday why the two seniors were being suspended. Both players have been an integral part of the Badgers’ defense. Pleasant has made 80 career tackles over 14 starts and was listed beside safety Jay Valai for a starting slot on the most recent depth chart.

Skins’ Campbell says he’ll unleash emotion this season  08/06/09 12:01 AM

ASHBURN - Even Jason Campbell’s father is pressed to come up with examples of his son losing his temper. “Things that would bother me,“ Larry Campbell said, “don’t bother him.“ Carlos Rogers said he hasn’t seen a football-related tantrum from his longtime friend and Washington Redskins teammate since their days at Auburn. Is there anything recent? Outside of football, perhaps?

Washington is an international city  06/28/09 12:01 AM

Washington shows off some of the best of the U.S. in its monuments and museums, but if that’s all you ever see in the nation’s capital, you’re missing out. The rest of the world also sends some of its best to Washington. Embassies, exhibits and restaurants make Washington an international city, if you just take the time to look.

The Challenge of D.C. Representation  03/23/09 12:01 AM

LEXINGTON It’s hard to find anyone who disagrees in principle with the current efforts to grant the District of Columbia representation in the House of Representatives. The population of the District of Columbia is bigger than that of several states. Yet, those states have representation in the House and Senate and the District does not. This just doesn’t seem fair.

Mark Warner Supports D.C. School Vouchers  03/18/09 12:01 AM

Warner’s Right We have consistently called for Mark Warner, Virginia’s new senator, to publicly announce his opposition to the federal card check bill that would diminish workers’ rights by effectively eliminating the secret ballot from union organizing elections. Warner’s stature as a nationally influential moderate in the Democratic Party would be enhanced by such a bold move. So far, he has chosen to be quiet and cautious.

New Licenses, IDs Promote Security  02/23/09 12:01 AM

Type_webhead_here Not too long ago a Virginia driver’s license was simply a permit to operate a vehicle. Today, it is one of the keys to functioning in American society. Over the years, the driver’s license has evolved to become the most widely used form of identification in our country. You need one to board an airplane, to enter a federal building, and to open a bank account. Because of this evolution, the importance of driver’s license security continues to be a top priority for the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.

Pretenders’ new U.S. tour is no greatest-hits concert  01/29/09 12:01 AM

LOS ANGELES Not too long ago, Chrissie Hynde was still touring behind the same hits that have made her husky, vibrato-steeped voice one of the most memorable in rock’n’ roll.  Now the Pretenders’ frontwoman is gearing up for a U.S. tour that stops Monday in Washington for a sold-out show at the 9:30 Club in support of “Break Up the Concrete,“ the group’s first studio album in six years. While she may sing classics such as “Brass in Pocket,“ newer tunes will fill the bulk of her repertoire.

The presidential effect  01/01/09 1:00 AM

WASHINGTON Presidents are “in” again, and that means Washington is a hot spot. With Barack Obama moving into the White House this month and the ongoing celebration of Abraham Lincoln’s life, the nation’s capital and its many tourism sites have been thrust into the spotlight. As the nation installs its first black president, dozens of exhibits and attractions are touching on the inauguration, the nation’s political and social history and its progress from the struggle for civil rights.
