‘Fanboys’ is uneven but funny  03/13/09 12:01 AM

‘Fanboys’ is uneven but funny You can tell a lot about a comedy by its cameos. Actually, if a comedy stoops to having cameo appearances by celebrities, it is usually a sign of desperation and a willingness to interrupt the illusion of the story with a cheap gag. But every once in a while, cameos work. Such is the case with “Fanboys,“ and you can tell a lot about “Fanboys” by its cameos.

Film review: ‘Watchmen’ winds down slowly  03/05/09 1:00 AM

Film review: ‘Watchmen’ winds down slowly

The most unintentionally hilarious moment in “Watchmen”? There are so many to choose from, so very many.  But it would have to be the love scene played out on a desert planet at sundown, the two naked lovers standing and kissing in front of a nuclear explosion and mushroom cloud.

‘Australia’: Giddyap for long slog

Presumably, Baz Luhrmann could not decide whether to make an old-fashioned Western or a war film.  Hey, he must have said, let’s do both! Mish-mash ‘Bolt’ fails to find its way whole  11/22/08 12:01 AM

In the preview for the new animated family comedy “Bolt,“ it’s all hamster, all the time. That was a smart move by the marketing people. The hamster, whose name is Rhino, is by far the best thing in the movie. He isn’t funny, exactly, but he is funnyish, which will have to do. The problem is, he doesn’t show up until the film is halfway over.
