Girls cross country: Dobbs unseats Lautzenheiser
Deep Run junior Erica Dobbs had a fairly simple, straightforward strategy for the Central Region girls cross country meet: find Midlothian’s Kathleen Lautzenheiser and follow in her footsteps for as long as possible, then win a sprint to the finish line. Executing her plan to topple the two-time defending regional champion was considerably more difficult. But as she rounded the final turn running stride for stride with Lautzenheiser, Dobbs unleashed the finishing kick that earned her all-state honors in the 1,600 meters and pulled away to win her first region title by 5 seconds yesterday at Pole Green Park.

PREP NOTES: Deep Run girls get best of volleyball rival Godwin
Even though the Deep Run girls volleyball team won the first two games against Mills Godwin last week, no one was surprised the match wound up going five games. Deep Run won 16-14 in the fifth. The Colonial District rivals went five in last year’s district tournament final that Godwin won (17-15). They went five twice in tournament play in 2007. The Eagles won the district final; the Wildcats won the region title and went on to win a second straight state Group AAA crown.
