PREP NOTES: Deep Run girls get best of volleyball rival Godwin  10/21/09 12:01 AM

Even though the Deep Run girls volleyball team won the first two games against Mills Godwin last week, no one was surprised the match wound up going five games. Deep Run won 16-14 in the fifth. The Colonial District rivals went five in last year’s district tournament final that Godwin won (17-15). They went five twice in tournament play in 2007. The Eagles won the district final; the Wildcats won the region title and went on to win a second straight state Group AAA crown.

Westfield win golf title  10/21/09 12:01 AM

MONETA - The weather may have been perfect for golf, but Waterfront Country Club continued to beat up the participants in the Virginia High School League Group AAA tournament. The survivors in yesterday’s final round were first-round leader Westfield and Battlefield’s Andrew Lister. Westfield, paced by Wesley Liu’s 72, shot 305-617, 11 strokes better than runner-up James Madison. Liu shared low score honors for the day with James Madison’s Chris Wendell.

High school notes  10/14/09 12:01 AM

James River’s field hockey team shares the top spot in the Dominion District. Usually, the Rapids are alone, but Cosby upended James River 2-1 at James River last Wednesday. Cosby, in its fourth year, was 0-7-1 against the Rapids. The tie with Cosby was James River’s only blemish in district play in the past four seasons. The Titans are coached by Rachel Mead, who built a Central Region title-winning program at James River before becoming the school’s activities director and handing the Rapids’ reins to Slade Gormus in 2000. Gormus directed the Rapids to the state Group AAA title in 2002, the only Central Region team to win the state championship.
