Archer, Tribe deal Delaware 30-20 defeat
WILLIAMSBURG—They whole is impressive for William and Mary quarterback R.J. Archer. The half is almost unbelievable. Archer, a former wide receiver in his first year starting at quarterback, continued to complete first-half passes with off-the-chart accuracy last night. The senior connected on 15 of 21 passes—including a school-record 91-yard TD pass to Chase Hill—as fifth-ranked William and Mary jumped on Delaware and went on to a 30-20 Colonial Athletic Association victory before a sellout crowd of 12,259 at Zable Stadium.

Nebraska’s Pelini questions end zone call
LINCOLN, Neb. - Speaking in measured words, Nebraska coach Bo Pelini indicated he believes Menelik Holt made a good catch for a touchdown on a pass ruled incomplete in the Huskers’ 16-15 loss to Virginia Tech on Saturday. Pelini said yesterday that no one play cost Nebraska the game. But he said that judging from the film, it looked to him as if Holt held on for what should have been a 21-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. With the extra point, that touchdown would have given the Huskers a 19-10 lead.

PAUL WOODY COLUMN: Sports wagering could pay off for states
We live in strange and contradictory times. Two bumper stickers, seen on the same car, sum things up nicely. One said, “Save the Bay.“ Another said, “Raise my taxes, lose my vote.“ There is a correlation between those ideas. Cities, counties and states need money to operate, and the news keeps getting worse. After one round of budget cuts to make up for a $299 million shortfall, Virginia faces another round to account for an additional $1.2 billion in anticipated lost revenue.

Ruling bars Delaware’s betting plan
PHILADELPHIA - A federal appeals court ruled yesterday that sports betting in Delaware would violate a 1992 federal ban on such wagering, essentially halting the state’s plans to start taking bets next month. The plan was opposed by the professional sports leagues and the NCAA, which claimed it violated the federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, would harm their reputations and expose young people to gambling.

CAA tournament men: Georgia State 54, Delaware 41
The Georgia State Panthers used a 15-6 run at the start of the second half to take control and went on to beat the cold-shooting Delaware Blue Hens 54-41 in the first round of the Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament at the Richmond Coliseum. The eighth-seeded Panthers (12-19) play top-seeded Virginia Commonwealth (21-9) tomorrow at noon in the quarterfinals.

Men: VCU 78, Delaware 67
Eric Maynor scored 21 of his 30 points in the second half, enabling the Virginia Commonwealth University Rams to catch up and eventually pull away down the stretch in a 78-67 victory over the Delaware Blue Hens tonight at the Siegel Center. Coupled with Northeastern’s loss to Georgia State, the victory put VCU (12-4, 19-8) in sole possession of first place in the Colonial Athletic Association with two conference games remaining.
