Trinity Episcopal fells No. 10 Collegiate  01/21/09 12:01 AM

The Collegiate Cougars girls basketball team has pulled out close-game victories four times this season. The Trinity Episcopal Titans turned the tables on the visiting Cougars, ranked No. 10 in The Times-Dispatch Top 10, last night. Trinity Episcopal rallied from an eight-point deficit at halftime, took the lead on a pair of free throws by Jennifer Smith with 57 seconds remaining and came away with a 42-38 League of Independent Schools victory. The loss was Collegiate’s first.

Girls Athlete of the Week: Dominique Meeks, Collegiate  01/16/09 12:01 AM

What she did: The Cougars’ do-everything leader averaged 16.7 points and 12 rebounds in victories over St. Gertrude (52-50), St. Catherine’s and Norfolk Academy (49-48). She also was credited with 16 steals. Against St. Gertrude, she became the first Collegiate player, boys or girls, to score 1,000 career points. Age: 17 Three words your friends would use to describe you: “Loud, energetic, reliable.“ Strengths: “Defense, rebounding, leadership.“ Toughest opponent other than yourself: “My mom. She always tells me what I’m doing wrong.“ I’m working to improve: “My offensive game and foul shots. Everything.“ Favorite food: Lasagna Favorite candy: Starburst Best sports memory: “It didn’t involve me, but when I was a sophomore playing volleyball, my teammate JoBeth [Stoddard] knocked a girl over with a spike.“ Biggest challenge: “Being positive. Not showing that I’m stressed.“ If she had one wish: “To have more wishes.“ Possession you can’t do without: “Shoes. High school notes: Collegiate’s Meeks passes two milestones  01/09/09 12:01 AM

The winter sports seasons have been good for Collegiate’s Dominique Meeks. A multitalented, 5-9 senior, Meeks scored the 1,000th point of her varsity basketball career in Collegiate’s 52-50 League of Independent Schools victory over St. Gertrude on Monday night.
