Richmond Councilman Jewell could get jail time in DUI case
Richmond City Councilman E. Martin Jewell faces the likelihood of brief jail time if convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol. Jewell, who spent several hours in the Richmond city lockup after his arrest Saturday morning and later was released on $500 bond, made an initial appearance yesterday in Richmond General District Court, where a judge set Dec. 7 as the date to hear the case.

Colonial Heights woman guilty in fatal crash with mo-ped
A Colonial Heights woman has pleaded guilty to killing one man and severely injuring another after colliding head-on with their mo-ped while intoxicated and traveling in the wrong lanes of Jefferson Davis Highway. Megan Lean Brown, 25, pleaded guilty Monday in Chesterfield County Circuit Court to involuntary manslaughter while driving intoxicated, maiming while driving intoxicated and driving under the influence of alcohol. She faces a combined maximum prison term of 16 years when she is sentenced Jan. 20.

Henrico man faces DUI count
Henrico County police have charged a county man with driving under the influence after a two-car collision that killed one man and sent nine others to area hospitals. The collision Saturday at 9:40 p.m. occurred after an eastbound car on Williamsburg Road swerved to avoid a motor scooter pulling away from Klockner Drive. The car, driven by Jerome J. Lewis, 25, of the 2200 block of Brockway Lane, crossed the center line and collided with an oncoming sport utility vehicle, authorities said.

Guatemalan man gets 3½ years in DUI death in Chesterfield
An illegal immigrant from Guatemala was sentenced to 3½ years in prison yesterday for killing a Chesterfield County woman in a drunken-driving crash that left the victim pinned against the side of a convenience store. Circuit Judge Michael C. Allen sentenced Alberto Candino Bamaca, 39, to a total of 21 years but suspended 17½ years of that term on convictions of involuntary manslaughter, felony hit-and-run driving, and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Chesterfield mother gets 185 days for DUI with unbuckled child
A Chesterfield County mother who ran a red light at 80 mph and nearly crashed into several cars while driving drunk with her unbuckled infant in the car was sentenced yesterday to 185 days in jail. Daphne N. Holt, 25, pleaded guilty in Chesterfield Circuit Court to felony child endangerment and driving under the influence, her third DUI conviction since 2003.

Chesterfield woman faces charge of endangerment
A Chesterfield County mother accused of driving drunk with her 9-month-old son unbelted in his child-safety seat has been indicted on a felony child-endangerment charge. A Chesterfield Circuit Court grand jury returned the indictment Jan. 20 against Daphne N. Holt, 25, who also is charged with driving while intoxicated for a third time since December 2003.
