Barkley taking leave of absence from his TV job  01/09/09 6:08 PM

Charles Barkley is taking a leave of absence from the broadcast booth. Turner Sports made the announcement today, hours after police said Barkley—an analyst for the TNT network and a former NBA star—was legally drunk when he was arrested Dec. 31 on suspicion of drunken driving in Scottsdale, Ariz. Test results show Barkley, 45, had a blood-alcohol level at .149, nearly twice the legal limit of .08 in Arizona.

Abuse, neglect charges accompany Henrico DUIs  12/24/08 12:01 AM

A 45-year-old Henrico County woman faces a Jan. 27 hearing in Henrico General District Court on child-abuse and resisting-arrest charges. Maureen Witmer, of the 5200 block of Cobblers Stone Court, was arrested early Monday and charged with driving under the influence and two other offenses, according to court records. A 9-year-old was in the car with her when Witmer was stopped Sunday shortly after 8 p.m. in the 11000 block of Nuckols Road, court records show. Witmer was formally arrested about four hours later. She has been released on bond.
