Public forum will assess Richmond school needs
A committee working with Mayor-elect Dwight Clinton Jones will hold a public forum tonight to assess the strengths, weaknesses and needs of the Richmond public schools. The committee is one of 10 groups of volunteers appointed by Jones to look at various city departments and services. The committees are to submit reports to the mayor-elect by Saturday. They probably won’t be released publicly, said Kevin O’Holleran, a spokesman for the mayor-elect’s transition team.

McQuinn to face no House opponent
Delores L. McQuinn is the one and only. The Richmond City Councilwoman is the lone candidate to qualify for the ballot for the 70th District House of Delegates seat, according to the State Board of Elections. A special election is being held Jan. 6 to replace Del. Dwight Clinton Jones, who takes over as Richmond mayor on Jan. 1. The 70th district includes part of Richmond and parts of Henrico and Chesterfield counties.

Perhaps it’s too much to hope Dwight Clinton Jones will toss away the security blanket Mayor L. Douglas Wilder draped around himself. Wilder has been the mid-city mayor with the big-city security detail—around-the-clock coverage from an eight-member Executive Protection Unit whose police officers chauffeur the mayor to his appointments in a Mercury Grand Marquis.

Mayor-elect focused on new relationships
A few weeks before he enters Richmond City Hall, Mayor-elect Dwight Clinton Jones is focusing on three appointments, planning an inaugural celebration and underscoring his desire to work with—not against—the City Council. In a recent interview, Jones gave no hints at a possible agenda and said he’s begun meeting with all nine council members to set a tone of respect and cooperation.
Council’s first step: Replace McQuinn?
One of the first assignments for the next Richmond City Council will likely be picking a replacement for one of its members. Council members will have 45 days to appoint a representative from the 7th District if longtime Councilwoman Delores L. McQuinn wins a Jan. 6 special election for a seat in the General Assembly. McQuinn is running unopposed in the House of Delegates’ 70th District after winning Saturday’s Democratic primary. The strongly Democratic district includes parts of the city’s East End, as well as eastern portions of Chesterfield and Henrico counties, and it’s currently represented by Mayor-elect Dwight Clinton Jones.

Richmond Mayor-elect Dwight Clinton Jones is placing his first “help wanted” ad. An ad seeking applicants for chief administrative officer of the city is being placed in local and national publications this week, said Kevin O’Holleran, a spokesman for Jones. The ad lists the salary as negotiable based on qualifications and experience, and says the position will remain open until it is filled.
