Football: Essex 46, King William 13  09/03/09 11:22 PM

Lyndon Garner threw for four touchdowns and ran for another to lead Essex over King William last night. Garner connected with John Ellis on a 40-yard score, and with Eeon Hammond on passes of 21, 19 and 12 yards, respectively. Garner also ran for a 3-yard score. James Hence ran for 7and 12-yard TDs for the Trojans (1-0), who totaled 434 yards.

Eboni Veney drove in the game winning run to lift Essex over Arcadia 2-1 in the finals. With bases loaded in the 7th inning and no outs, Lacey Berry hit a sacrifice fly to score the tying run. Veney then singled in the next run. She finished 2 for 4, and Chelsea Davis was 1 for 3 with a triple for the Trojans.

TAPPAHANNOCK Raynell Vesselles remembers Chris Brown singing and dancing in the hallways at Essex High School in Tappahannock. “You always knew he was coming because you could hear him before you saw him,“ she said. Vesselles is a counselor at Essex High, the place where Brown, a native of the small town, spent his freshman and part of his sophomore year as an average student who played point guard for the Essex Trojans. In 2004, he dropped out to pursue what has escalated into a blockbuster career.

Boys: Essex 75, Washington and Lee 60  02/20/09 11:00 PM

John Dille scored 26 of his 29 points in the second half, 15 of which came in the third quarter, and Essex rolled past Washington and Lee 75-60 to win the district title for the second straight year. Jeremy Sayles finished with 17 points, five assists, and went 8 for 8 on free throws, and Chuck Samuel hit 16 points and eight rebounds for the Trojans.

Boys: Essex 60, Northumberland 50  02/19/09 12:01 AM

Essex defeated Northumberland in the Northern Neck District semifinals, led by 16 points from John Dille. Dille also had seven rebounds and five blocks. Teammate Reggie Johnson was just shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Northumberland was led by Malik Shabazz’s 15 points. In the other semifinal, No. 4 seed Washington and Lee defeated Lancaster 60-58. Essex plays Washington and Lee Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Northumberland.
