Richmond-area schools lauded by U.S. News
Several Richmond-area high schools made U.S. News & World Report’s annual ranking of best American high schools, which was topped by a school in Fairfax County. Richmond’s Community High School, Henrico County’s Deep Run and Godwin high schools and Chesterfield County’s Midlothian High School were among 504 nationally to win silver medals.

Weekend wrecks fatal to 5 Virginians
A Richmond woman has died of injuries she suffered in a two-vehicle crash Sunday in Chesterfield County, police said. Lola T. Brooks, 86, was a passenger in a car that was eastbound in the 9100 block of Midlothian Turnpike when it collided with a pickup truck just after 8 p.m. The crash occurred as the truck, which was headed south on Pinetta Drive, tried to cross Midlothian Turnpike, police said.
Weekend wrecks fatal to 4 Virginians
A Centreville man was killed Sunday when his car ran off Braddock Road (state Route 620) in Fairfax County and hit a tree, Virginia State Police said. Frank Jensen, 31, died at the scene at 1:55 a.m. near the intersection with Virginia Chase Drive (state Route 8318). Police said Jensen was driving east on Braddock Road when his car veered to the left and struck a curb before hitting a wooden fence, a utility pole and a tree, ejecting him from the vehicle. He was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

3 Virginians die of car-crash injuries
A Manassas man died of injuries he suffered in a single-car crash in Fairfax County yesterday, Virginia State Police said. Roberto Rivas, 28, was traveling north on Sully Road, south of McLearen Road, at 3:04 a.m. when his vehicle struck a guardrail, ejecting Rivas. He was not wearing a seat belt, police said. Also:

Fairfax search becomes recovery mission
LORTON—Fairfax County police say the search for a missing police officer in Pohick Bay has become a recovery mission. The police department enlisted the help of the dive team, police marine patrol and the Fairfax County Fire Department after 2nd Lt. Frank Stecco failed to resurface during a helicopter water rescue exercise on Tuesday.
200 military absentee votes in jeopardy in Va.
SPRINGFIELD—A Republican Fairfax County supervisor is warning that more than 200 absentee ballots from members of the military could go uncounted because of a technicality. County Registrar Rokey Suleman II has set aside 255 federal write-in absentee ballots because they were submitted without a witness address, supervisor Patrick Herrity said today at a press conference.
Va. police officer missing after water-rescue training exercise
LORTON—Fairfax County police say the police officer who disappeared in Pohick Bay during a training exercise was not a member of the police dive team. Officer Shelley Broderick says the officer was a portraying a victim in a water rescue exercise for the police helicopter unit. The dive team, members of the police marine patrol and members of the Fairfax fire department were also involved. Broderick says the exercise is now the subject of an internal investigation to determine if proper policies and protocols were followed.
