Fairfax Co. parks, libraries could face cuts  11/15/09 5:42 PM

FAIRFAX (AP)—Fairfax County parks and libraries could face additional budget cuts next year. Fairfax County Executive Anthony H. Griffin has asked the Park Authority and public library system to propose 15 percent reductions in county funding for fiscal year 2011. That’s on top of cuts of 15 percent or more this fiscal year. Griffin is working to draft a budget that closes a projected shortfall of more than $315 million, caused largely by reduced residential and commercial property tax revenue.

Fairfax soldier dies in Afghanistan  08/05/09 12:01 AM

The Department of Defense has announced the death of a soldier from Fairfax serving in Afghanistan. The military says 42-year-old Sgt. 1st Class Alejandro Granado died Sunday after his vehicle was attacked by an improvised explosive device in Qole Gerdsar, Afghanistan. Granado was one of three men killed in the attack.

Va. law-office worker charged with embezzlement  03/30/09 12:01 AM

Fairfax County police say a former law-office administrator has been charged with stealing tens of thousands of dollars from the office. Police announced last week that 36-year-old Lisa Mylan McCormick of Sterling has been charged with four counts of felony embezzlement. Police say that after McCormick stopped working for lawyer Kevin Fitzpatrick, he discovered the thefts and reported them.

Fairfax County wins battle to land Hilton headquarters  02/05/09 12:01 AM

Hilton Hotels Corp. is moving its headquarters from Beverly Hills, Calif., to Northern Virginia. The company is expected to spend at least $17 million on the move to Fairfax County and create more than 300 permanent, full-time jobs in the next three years, Gov. Timothy M. Kaine said in announcing the project yesterday. The state is helping Fairfax with a $1 million grant from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund and $2.5 million in economic development incentive grants.

Election officials across the South are untangling minor glitches as voters flock to the polls and vote by mail ahead of Election Day. Yesterday, a Tennessee county reported some voters received ballots for the wrong district, and an Atlanta suburb discovered problems with some of its absentee ballots. Florida crush: Florida Democrats are urging the state to extend early voting to deal with the crush of voters descending on polling sites there.
