Albemarle man sentenced in fatal Culpeper crash
An Albemarle County man will spend more than two years in prison for causing a 2007 accident in Culpeper County that left a King George County couple dead. Circuit Judge Jack Berry sentenced Alvin R. Thompson to 10 years on Tuesday, suspending all but two years and three months of the sentence. Berry also ordered Thompson, 55, to remain on good behavior for five years and put him on supervised probation for two years after his release. Thompson pleaded guilty to the charges in December.

Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Les Tyler said the accident was reported around 2:50 a.m. The victims were identified as Tyler Scott Harlow, 20, and Joseph Lee Sahnow, 20, both of Ruckersville; Tianna V. Richmond judge certifies charges in fatal hit-and-run
Charges certified in fatal hit-and-run Sean Beir’s brother was driving the two of them along Walmsley Boulevard to buy cigarettes when Beir felt the pickup truck run over something, he testified yesterday in a Richmond courtroom. From the passenger seat, Beir turned and saw someone lying on the side of the road around 9 or 10 p.m. on Jan. 16. He said he alerted his brother, Bryan Christopher Shull, 36, of Lake Hills Road in Chesterfield County.

Woman dies in Virginia Beach crash A 68-year-old woman died after her car struck another vehicle and then a building in Virginia Beach on Monday night, Virginia State Police said. Barbara Teresa Duzant of Virginia Beach was driving a car on Princess Anne Road when it struck a parked vehicle at Witchduck Road, police said. Duzant’s car continued to travel a quarter of a mile on the opposite side of Princess Anne Road and then struck a building on Oakmears Crescent at 11:40 p.m., police said.

Crashes on Virginia highways fatal to four
A 23-year-old man, one of 10 passengers in a minivan, died at a Wythe County hospital early yesterday after the van rolled three times on Interstate 77 in Bland County. Virginia State Police said Jose Luis Rivas Morales of Alvarez, Mexico, died shortly before 2 a.m. at Wytheville Community Hospital. Morales was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

Two die in U.S. 29 crash in Nelson
Two people from Bloomfield, Conn., were killed in a single-vehicle crash in Nelson County on Sunday, Virginia State Police said. Henry A. Smith, 73, and his passenger, Avis M. Smith, 43, died in the crash on U.S. 29 just south of the Albemarle County line, state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said. The crash happened at about 11 a.m. when the car ran off the left side of northbound U.S. 29, drove across the median and into the southbound lane, Geller said. The car struck an embankment, overturned and landed in a culvert. The driver and the passenger died at the scene, police said.

Nelson County crash kills Wingina man
A Wingina man was killed Saturday when his car ran off the road, struck a tree and caught fire in Nelson County, Virginia State Police said. Clarence H. Rose Jr., 56, died at the scene about 20 minutes after the 10:42 p.m. wreck, about a tenth of a mile east of state Route 646. Police said the car Rose was driving veered off the left side of the road and struck a tree, causing his car to burst into flames.

A King William County man was fatally injured in a single-vehicle crash Monday night on Interstate 295 in Henrico County. Virginia State Police trooper T.M. Howard said Marvin Delano Blake, 42, died at VCU Medical Center early yesterday, several hours after the 10:45 p.m. crash. Howard said Blake was driving south on I-295 when his station wagon struck a support pillar for an overhead sign near the state Route 156 exit.

Henrico crash victim identified
A woman who was killed Sunday night when her car struck a tree in eastern Henrico County has been identified as Stacy Lynn Hernandez, 45, Henrico police said yesterday. Police said Hernandez was driving on Darbytown Road about 8:15 p.m. when she lost control of her car, spun off the road and struck a tree near Carters Mill Road. Hernandez, who police said wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was traveling alone and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said she lived in the 6600 block of Charles City Road in Henrico.

Manassas woman fatally hit by bus in Prince William
A Manassas woman was struck and killed by a bus in Prince William County on Wednesday. Police said the driver of a bus making a right turn from the Manassas Mall did not see Cristina A. Claros, 29, who was attempting to cross Rixlew Lane at 7:15 p.m. The bus hit the woman and dragged her a short distance before running over her with its left front tire, police said. Claros was taken to Prince William Hospital in Manassas, where she died.

Melfa man dies after car hits ditch, overturns
A Melfa man died early yesterday when the vehicle he was driving ran off an icy stretch of state Route 609 and overturned in Accomack County, Virginia State Police said. Clayton W. Kellam, 42, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 1:40 a.m. wreck, about a tenth of a mile north of state Route 638. Police said he was ejected from his vehicle after his car struck a ditch and overturned. He was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

Girl, 16, dies after Northern Va. crash
A weekend crash killed a 16-year-old girl in Prince William County, Virginia State Police said. Alyssa Leighann Beach of Nokesville was driving west on state Route 215, one-tenth of a mile east of state Route 655, at 11:09 p.m. Saturday when the car ran off the left side of the road into a ditch, police said. The car vaulted forward and upward and struck several trees before coming to rest in a grassy field. Beach died the next day at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church. She was wearing a seat belt, police said.
