SUV crash kills woman in Henrico
A Henrico County woman died in a single-vehicle crash Saturday shortly before midnight after her sport-utility vehicle struck a tree. Virginia State Police said Barbara D. Daniel, 58, apparently overcorrected her steering and her eastbound SUV crossed Springfield Road into the wrong lane and left the road. The crash took place about 600 feet east of Echo Lake Drive. The vehicle flipped and the roof struck a tree. Daniel, of the 3000 block of Stone Arbor Lane, was not wearing a seat belt, police said. She died at the scene.

Two pedestrians are hit and killed
A man walking along U.S. 360 in Amelia County was struck and killed by a pickup truck Wednesday night. Trooper T.G. Watson of the Virginia State Police said Rashmikant Dahyadhai Patel, 54, of Amelia was pronounced dead at the scene of the 6 p.m. crash. The fatality occurred when a pickup truck traveling east on U.S. 360 struck Patel about two-tenths of a mile west of U.S. 360 Business, Watson said.

Chesterfield man dies from crash injuries
A Chesterfield County man has died from injuries he received in a New Year’s Eve car crash caused by a tree branch that fell on top his car, county police said. Eugene D. Gilliam Sr., 66, of the 9600 block of Precedent Road, died Saturday at VCU Medical Center. Police said Gilliam was driving west in the 8500 block of Hickory Road when high winds toppled a tree branch onto the roof of his car, causing him to lose control and crash into a tree about 11:30 a.m.

Sports car hits Roanoke house, killing driver
A 21-year-old man who had been driving with a suspended license died late Friday after police chased him and he slammed his sports car into a brick house in northeast Roanoke. Thomas Bennett, a Bedford County resident described by family members as a car enthusiast, died after a crash that occurred shortly before 11 p.m. on Fleming Avenue, a block from Plantation Road.

An Alexandria man has become Virginia’s third traffic fatality of 2009. Joshua S. Buker, 21, was killed yesterday when a car he was riding in struck a tree and a utility pole in Fairfax County.

Conn. man is killed in wreck on I-85
A Waterbury, Conn., man was killed yesterday when the trailer he was towing collided with a tractor-trailer, causing the truck to overturn, on southbound Interstate 85 in Dinwiddie County, Virginia State Police said. Edmund J. Brucato Jr., 66, was pronounced dead at the scene after the tractor-trailer overturned onto his car and trailer, said state police Lt. Tom Cunningham. The truck driver, Daryl L. Moore, 39, of Emporia, was not injured, police said.

Oak tree claims 2 motorists in week
A woman was killed yesterday morning in Suffolk when her car ran off the road and smashed into the same large oak tree that was hit by another vehicle in a fatal crash on Saturday, authorities said.

Man killed trying to stop truck leaving campground
The manager of a Dinwiddie County campground was struck and killed Monday evening after he apparently fell from the cab of a truck that he tried to stop, Virginia State Police said yesterday. Charles Louis Blazek, 57, of Disputanta was pronounced dead after being taken to Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg. Police said the incident occurred about 8:50 p.m. when Blazek, manager of Picture Lake Campground off U.S. 1, saw the driver of the truck portion of a tractor-trailer try to leave the campground.

Palmyra man dies in Louisa crash at interstate exit ramp
A Palmyra man died Sunday in a two-vehicle crash on the Interstate 64 exit ramp at U.S. 15 in Louisa County, state police said yesterday. Daniel S. Parks, 48, died at 5:45 p.m. at the University of Virginia Medical Center, more than two hours after the 3:27 p.m. crash. Police said Parks had exited I-64 and was attempting to turn left onto U.S. 15 (James Madison Highway) when he pulled into the path of a sport utility vehicle about two-tenths of a mile north of U.S. 250. Parks was wearing a safety belt, police said.
