13 killed in Labor Day weekend crashes in Va.  09/10/09 12:01 AM

Thirteen people were killed on the state’s highways during the Labor Day holiday weekend, up from seven last year, according to Virginia State Police. During four days, state police were called to 621 crashes, the agency said in a news release. Troopers also stopped 9,386 speeders and charged 90 people with impaired driving. More than 2,500 drivers were given reckless-driving tickets, while 827 people were cited for seat-belt violations and 251 people were given tickets for child-restraint violations.

Crash kills two in Highland Springs  08/16/09 12:01 AM

Two people died from injuries received in a two-vehicle crash Friday at South Holly Avenue and Pleasant Street in Highland Springs. Henrico County police and fire responded to the crash in east Henrico at about 5:45 p.m. Police said David B. Hicks, 58, of South Ivy Avenue and Harriet G. Meadowcroft, 78, of Longstreet Avenue were killed in the crash. Both addresses are in Highland Springs.

Three killed in area crashes  08/16/09 12:01 AM

A fatal crash in Richmond yesterday and Friday’s wreck that killed two people in Henrico County brought this year’s statewide total of highway fatalities to 454, compared with 522 at the same time in 2008. Yesterday a driver was killed after she crashed a minivan into a GRTC Transit System bus that was stopped at a bus stop about 6:30 p.m. near Fairfield Avenue and Kane Street in Richmond’s East End.

3 die in separate crashes in Va.  05/06/09 12:01 AM

A Floyd County woman died Sunday after she lost control of her car and flipped twice on state Route 653 in Floyd County, state police said. Ashley Renee Chaffin, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 10:05 a.m. wreck about a half-mile north of state Route 660. Police said Chaffin was driving north when her car slid off the road in a curve, veered over an embankment and flipped twice, landing on its roof. Police said she wasn’t wearing a seat belt.

Crashes in Sussex, Mathews kill three  02/14/09 12:01 AM

Two people were killed in a fiery crash in Sussex County on Thursday. Police said Kevin Nathaniel Taylor, 20, of Emporia and Skylar Kirby Brockwell, 20, of DeWitt were in a car traveling south on state Route 638 around 9:30 p.m. when it ran off the road, about one-quarter mile north of state Route 602, struck a tree and caught fire. Taylor and Brockwell died at the scene. Police could not tell who was driving and said neither was wearing a seat belt.

Pedestrian victim from Petersburg  02/01/09 12:01 AM

Chesterfield County police have identified the pedestrian killed Friday on U.S. 1 as Frank Tinsley White Jr., 43, of Petersburg. White died at the scene after being struck by a car about 7:45 p.m. in the 16400 block of Jefferson Davis Highway, police said. A sedan was northbound on Jefferson Davis when it struck White while he was walking in the road, police said. The driver suffered minor injuries. An investigation is continuing.

Ice a factor in 3 highway deaths  01/30/09 12:01 AM

Icy roads were factors in three fatal crashes this week, Virginia State Police said. A 15-year-old girl died early yesterday after a wreck in Bedford County on Wednesday. Mariah Lynn Pitts of Lynchburg was a passenger in a pickup truck that was traveling on state Route 708, six-tenths of a mile south of U.S. 460. Police said the truck hit an ice patch, ran off the road to the right, struck a utility pole and overturned into a creek at 11:20 p.m. Pitts, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at Lynchburg General Hospital yesterday at 1:25 a.m., police said.

Manassas crash kills Bumpass man  01/25/09 12:01 AM

A Bumpass man died after being ejected from the bed of a pickup truck in Manassas yesterday. Kevin Everton Simpson, 21, was riding in the truck when it ran off the left side of Quarry Road near the intersection with Battery Heights Boulevard and hit a tree at 2:07 a.m. Simpson died at Prince William Hospital in Manassas, police said.

Newport News man among 3 killed in crashes  01/16/09 12:01 AM

A 33-year-old man was killed in a single-car crash in Newport News yesterday. Robert Tinsley Fields IV of Newport News driving on J. Clyde Morris Boulevard, 200 feet west of Louise Drive, when he lost control of his vehicle while exiting the interstate and struck a pole at 9:59 a.m. Fields was wearing a seat belt and died at the scene, police said.

A 52-year-old woman, riding with her family in a van in Sussex County, was killed Wednesday when high winds toppled a dead pine tree onto the passing vehicle’s roof, Virginia State Police said yesterday.

State officials: Drivers in Virginia traffic being more careful  12/31/08 12:01 AM

Virginia is poised to set a record low for traffic fatalities in more than 40 years of tracking highway deaths. The number of traffic deaths stood yesterday at 803—218 fewer than a year ago—with less than 48 hours left in 2008, according to Virginia State Police. Virginia has been tracking highway fatalities since 1966. Until this year, the lowest number of deaths in a year was 839, set in 1992.

Va. traffic crashes fatal to three  12/31/08 12:01 AM

A Colonial Heights man and two others have died this week as a result of wrecks on Virginia roadways, Virginia State Police said. Oren Walter Carter, 59, died in Sussex County on Monday after the pickup he was driving ran off the road, hit a tree and overturned. Carter was pronounced dead at 4:20 p.m. at the scene of the crash on U.S. 460, about 2 miles south of state Route 62.

Victim in Richmond crash is identified  11/26/08 12:01 AM

A 49-year-old Richmond man who died of crash injuries he suffered Nov. 16 was identified yesterday by Virginia State Police. Douglas F. Wolliver Jr. of the 6000 block of Wainwright Drive in South Richmond died Sunday shortly after 4 p.m. at VCU Medical Center. He was a passenger in a car headed north on German School Road about a half-mile from his home when it was hit by a car at German School’s intersection with Midlothian Turnpike, police said.
