Big music names hitting the area’s amphitheaters this summer
The recording industry might still be hemorrhaging because of Internet piracy. But so far, no one has figured out a way to duplicate the experience of a live concert for free, so the concert industry has remained surprisingly healthy. People might be cutting back on travel and fancy dinners, but the allure of seeing a favorite musician live is apparently an indulgence millions are still taking.

Suicides tend to go up during hard times
Nationally, suicide experts say it’s impossible to know whether more people are contemplating suicide because of the economic downturn. However, past trends suggest that during times of high unemployment, more people do kill themselves. According to the American Association of Suicidology, the U.S. suicide rate peaked at 17.4 suicides per 100,000 population in 1933. That year, 25 percent of the labor force was unemployed.

ConnectNetwork to use grant to expand
The ConnectNetwork will expand and improve with a three-year $240,000 grant. The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation recently awarded half the grant, $120,000 to the Community Foundation Serving Richmond and Central Virginia. The foundation, which operates in partnership with the ConnectNetwork and Virginia Commonwealth University, will match the grant.

A consummate connector
As an aspiring biologist, Nancy B. Stutts conducted research in a Venezuelan cloud forest. But after moving to Richmond in 1980, she knew a career in tropical biology wasn’t likely. She shifted her attention to nonprofits and eventually conceived a Web-based networking system that links nonprofit, business, government and civic-minded leaders.
