Miami eyes rewarding Shannon  10/05/09 12:01 AM

The season’s first month was a clear success for Miami, with three wins over nationally ranked teams and plenty of reasons to believe the Hurricanes are on the cusp of rejoining the nation’s elite. For that, Randy Shannon may be on the verge of being rewarded handsomely. After No. 11 Miami beat Oklahoma 21-20 for the program’s most significant win in several years Saturday night, Hurricanes Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt reaffirmed that the university has no intentions of letting Shannon slip away. Shannon’s contract expires after the 2010 season, but formal talks about an extension haven’t yet taken place.

Little guy became big asset for Hokies  03/08/09 1:01 AM

BLACKSBURG This was it, the last shot, Hank Thorns’ final fling with basketball, the sport he loved so much. About two weeks had passed since college basketball’s signing day in mid-April 2007, and Thorns, a high school senior, still held just two scholarship offers, from New Hampshire and Old Dominion. He decided to play in a summer-league tournament in his hometown, Las Vegas. Try one more time to impress some people, he figured, and then he’d give up basketball to play football in college. He said he had interest from Oregon State, Nevada-Las Vegas, Utah and Utah State.
