Football: Franklin 22, Mathews 21
FRANKLIN—Lavon Evans rushed for 157 yards on 22 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead Franklin to a nondistrict victory over Mathews. Evans scored the last of his TDs with 7:47 to play, then ran in the two-point conversion try to put Franklin (3-0) ahead. The Franklin defense, which had given up 15 points in the third quarter, stiffened and shut out Mathews (1-2) the rest of the way.

Girls: Buffalo Gap downs Franklin in Group A Div. 1 semifinal
The Buffalo Gap Bison have the opportunity to win back-to-back state championships after beating the Franklin Broncos again in the semifinals of the Virginia High School League Group A, Division 1 girls basketball tournament at Richmond’s Siegel Center. The Bison won this afternoon’s tame 56-47. Last year the same two teams played in the title game that Buffalo Gap defeated Franlkin by 17 points.

Boys: Colonial Beach 84, Franklin 57
T.T. Carey scored half of his team’s total points with 42 as Colonial Beach romped past Franklin 84-57 to win the Group A, Region A, Division 1 championship. Carey added 11 rebounds, seven steals and four assists, and Dylan Farinet had 10 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Jeryl Dickerson also scored in double figures for the Drifters with 12 points.

Boys: Franklin 66, No. 10 Chesterfield Community 55
David Copeland scored 17 points and Clarence Hexstall had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds but Chesterfield Community fell to Franklin in the semifinal round of the Group A, Region A, Division 1 tournament. Juhahn Robinson added 14 for the Eagles, ranked No. 10 in the T-D Top 10. Ashley Lee led the Broncos with 17 points, Daquon Frazier had 13, and Jarell Britt and Donzell Shearin hit 12 each.

Girls: Franklin 83, Appomattox RGS 5
Franklin High School used balanced scoring to defeat Appomattox Regional Governor’s School in the Class A-1 Region C semifinals. Kiara Lee and Timia Hobbs scored 16 points each to lead five Franklin players in double figures. Keshera Bradley and Sharmese Fleetwood scored 12 apiece and Tashawn Hunt added 10. For Appomattox RGS, Roslyn Presley scored a game-high 26 and Tamra Gore added 15.

Boys: Chesterfield Community 69, Franklin 60
Not only did the Eagles clinch the Tri-Rivers regular-season championship, coach Toby Campbell picked up his 100th win as Chesterfield Community defeated Franklin. Chesterfield Community’s Clarence Hexstall had 12 points and 10 rebounds and David Copeland scored all 36 of his points after the first quarter. Juhahn Robinson had 10 assists and George Best had 13 rebounds.
