PAUL WOODY COLUMN: Sports wagering could pay off for states
We live in strange and contradictory times. Two bumper stickers, seen on the same car, sum things up nicely. One said, “Save the Bay.“ Another said, “Raise my taxes, lose my vote.“ There is a correlation between those ideas. Cities, counties and states need money to operate, and the news keeps getting worse. After one round of budget cuts to make up for a $299 million shortfall, Virginia faces another round to account for an additional $1.2 billion in anticipated lost revenue.

Atlantic City’s oldest casino brings back coins
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. It used to be the signature sound of gambling: the clacking of coins spilling into metal trays on slot machines. But newer electronic machines that spit paper vouchers or credit winnings to cards now emit only canned noise. Now Atlantic City’s oldest casino is bringing back the real clang amid indications that some gamblers miss the way things used to be.

Video-gambling machines seized in Hampton raids
Police seized dozens of suspected video-gambling machines in overnight raids at several Hampton strip malls. Police say they had been staking out three businesses since early March and conducted the seizures at Get Lucky Internet Time, Hampton Roads Billiards and Supplies, and Movie Play Home Gaming Supplies. A police spokeswoman says patrons of the businesses could face misdemeanor charges, but the main goal of the raids late Friday and early yesterday was to seize equipment and go after proprietors.

Ex-CEO of BetOnSports pleads guilty
ST. LOUIS—The former chief executive of BetOnSports pleaded guilty today to federal racketeering conspiracy, admitting that the Internet company falsely portrayed Web-based gambling as legal and caused customers to lose millions of dollars they’ll likely never get back. As part of a plea agreement with federal prosecutors, David Carruthers, 51, of the United Kingdom, agreed to cooperate in the case against BetOnSports founder Gary Kaplan and six other associates. Kaplan and four of the others are scheduled to go to trial in September. Two others remain at large.

Packer, Knight to analyze NCAA basketball tournament from Vegas
LAS VEGAS—Bob Knight, the winningest men’s basketball coach in Division I history, and former CBS sportscaster Billy Packer plan to analyze the NCAA men’s basketball tournament in a series of one-hour television programs taped at a sports book on the Las Vegas Strip. Packer told reporters that the show will not mention gambling even though it is to be filmed at the race and sports book at the Wynn Las Vegas.
