High school notes
Deep Run is searching for a varsity girls basketball coach. Shawna Duda, who started the program when the school opened in 2002, has stepped down to spend more time with her family. “I might get back into coaching sometime,“ Duda said. “My daughter [Savannah] is 15 months old and is a blast to play with.“ She missed a couple of weeks in February 2008 to give birth.

Group A, Division 1 girls final: Buffalo Gap 50, Bland County 40
Defending state champion Buffalo Gap outscored Bland County by 12 points in the first period of the Group A, Division 1 girls title game en route to a 50-40 victory at the Siegel Center. The Bears never recovered from the early deficit. Bland trailed by 20 points with four minutes remaining and cut the lead in half with a minute to play, but could get no closer.
Group A, Division 2 semifinal: Floyd County 62, Lee 47
Defending state champion Floyd County opened a 16-point lead over Lee in the first half of the girls Group A, Division 2 semifinal at the Siegel Center and went on to win 62-47. Floyd plays George Mason on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Siegel Center. The Buffaloes won the 2008 title over Lancaster and were the runners-up in 2007. Group A, Division 2 girls semifinal: George Mason 54, Lancaster 52
Chantal Thomas snapped a tied game by making a pair of free throws with 2:35 remaining in the first Group A, Division 2 girls semifinal today at the Siegel Center and George Mason beat Lancaster, 54-52. Lancaster’s Andrea White hit a long 3-pointer as time expired. The Mustangs play the winner of the Floyd County-Lee game on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Siegel Center for the state championship.
Carey, Drifters to play for title
T.T. Carey continued to move up the VHSL single-season and career scoring record lists while leading Colonial Beach to the Group A, Division 1 boys basketball tournament championship game. Carey, a senior, scored 23 points yesterday in the Drifters’ 55-36 victory over Altavista, the 2004 state champions, at the Siegel Center.

Bird sets up clash
Crunch time in the Dominion District has arrived for the L.C. Bird Skyhawks. L.C. Bird, ranked No. 4 in The Times-Dispatch Top 10 and the defending Central Region champion, held on to second place in the district with a 56-47 victory over third-place Manchester last night at Manchester. The victory set up a showdown with top-ranked Cosby tomorrow night at Cosby. The Titans have one loss in the district, a one-point defeat at the hands of Bird. The Titans thumped the Skyhawks in the championship game of the Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament before Christmas.

TDIT girls: Atlee 61, Deep Run 32
Atlee High School’s girls basketball team captured third place in the TDIT by beating Deep Run 61-32 at the Siegel Center. The boys’ third-place game between John Marshall and Cosby will tip off at 5 p.m. The girls’ championship game featuring L.C. Bird and Cosby begins at 6:30 p.m. and the boys’ championship, with Collegiate facing Highland Springs, set for 8:30 p.m.
TDIT boys: Chesterfield Community 74, Hopewell 67
Chesterfield Community won fifth place in the TDIT boys tournament, beating Hopewell 74-67 at the Siegel Center. The girls’ third-place game featuring Atlee and Deep Run is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
TDIT boys: Deep Run 59, Hanover 46
Deep Run’s boys basketball team captured seventh place in the TDIT today, beating Hanover 59-46 at the Siegel Center. The boys fifth-place game featuring Hopewell and Chesterfield Community has started and will be followed by the girls’ third-place game at 3:30 p.m.

Thomas Dale’s girls basketball team knocked off Clover Hill 63-46 to claim fifth place in the TDIt at the Siegel Center. The boys’ seventh-place game between Hanover and Deep Run is under way.

Highland Springs won the Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament girls’ seventh-place game this morning, beating Meadowbrook 57-46 at VCU’s Siegel Center. Clover Hill and Thomas Dale are currently playing for fifth place, and Atlee will take on Deep Run for third at 3:30 p.m. The girls final pits L.C. Bird against Cosby at 6:30 p.m. The boys’ bracket starts at noon with Hanover playing Deep Run. Hopewell takes on Chesterfield Community at 1:30 p.m. for fifth place and John Marshall plays Cosby at 5 p.m. for third. Highland Springs and Collegiate will play for the championship at 8:30 p.m.

TDIT semifinals nearing start
The Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament semifinals will start at 3:30 p.m. at VCU’s Siegel Center when L.C. Bird’s girls take on Atlee. Deep Run and Cosby play at 5 p.m. The boys semifinals will begin at 6:30 p.m. with John Marshall taking on Collegiate. Highland Springs plays Cosby at 8 p.m. in the final game of the day. In today’s girls consolation action, Clover Hill beat Meadowbrook 44-43 and Thomas Dale topped Highland Springs 64-56. In a boys consolation game, Chesterfield Community topped Hanover 50-46. Deep Run leads Hopewell 34-32 at halftime.
