Girls Volleyball: Mills Godwin 3, Deep Run 1  11/05/09 10:46 PM

Powhatan (19-3) claimed its 6th straight Southside District championship yesterday with a decisive victory over Bluestone. Brianna Barton had 7 aces and 18 digs for the Indians. Girls Volleyball: Powhatan 3, Park View 0  11/04/09 8:10 PM

No. 1 Powhatan (18-3) defeated No. 4 Park View yesterday in the semifinals of the Southside District. Janie Goodman had three kills, Ginna Tucker had eight digs and Brooke Strathy had 10 assists for the Indians. Powhatan will host the finals today, taking on the winner of No. 3 Bluestone vs. No. 2 Southampton. The Indians will also play Courtland in the quarterfinals of the regional tournament.

Girls Volleyball: St. Anne’s-Belfield 3, Collegiate 1  11/04/09 7:26 PM

St. Anne’s-Belfield (11-6) eliminated Collegiate (18-7) in the LIS semifinals yesterday in four close games. Emma Damon had three blocks and three kills, Kali Newlen had six kills and two blocks and Christine Thexton had five kills and three blocks to lead Collegiate. If Collegiate makes the state tournament, their next game will be Tuesday.

Girls volleyball: Atlee 3, Henrico 0  11/02/09 10:22 PM

Henrico defeated Varina 3-1 in a playoff for the fourth seed in the Capital District tournament, then fell to top-seeded Atlee in straight sets at Atlee. Katie Norris had 23 assists and four aces and Hailey Brooks recorded eight kills for the Raiders. Mariellyn Hagy paced Henrico with six kills and 10 digs. Henrico 13 11 9

Girls Volleyball: J.R. Tucker 3, Douglas Freeman 2  11/02/09 10:14 PM

Stefanie Froelich’s 30 assists and three aces along with Hannah Grisevich’s 12 kills was enough for the fifth-seeded Tigers to win a five-game thriller with fourth-seeded Rebels. Jordan Wootton supported their efforts with eight kills and two digs. Hanover bounced back from a first-game defeat to sweep the next three from Lee-Davis in the Capital District tournament semifinals. Hanover, the No. 2 seed, go 13 kills and 13 digs from Ryane Majewski and 27 assists from Mallory Moore. The third-seeded Confederates were led by Jessie Cappello, who had 23 digs and two aces. Valerie Carroll logged 20 kills, 2 blocks and 10 digs to lead Midlothian to victory in the quarterfinals of the Dominion District tournament. Becca Tatum contributed 27 assists to the Trojans’ effort. Midlothian, the fourth seed, plays top-seeded James River in Wednesday’s semifinals. Kaitlynn Wickersham of Manchester was credited with 16 kills, 13 digs and two blocks in last game for the Lancers.
