PGA: Great beginning for Woods
CHASKA, Minn.—Tiger Woods was twirling his clubs, not tossing them at his bag in disgust. Putts that grazed the edge of the hole and caused him so much angst were for birdie, not par or worse. Woods had no complaints yesterday after the first round of the PGA Championship. The only concerns might come from the guys chasing him.
Players parry pressure while chasing LPGA opportunities
Angela Buzminski has been in this position before. And she has learned from experience that the best way to deal with late-season pressure on the Duramed Futures Tour is to ignore it. Buzminski sits in sixth place on the Duramed money list heading into today’s first round of the $100,000 iMPACT Classic at Richmond Country Club. She trails the player perched in fifth place, Samantha Richdale, by just more than $4,000.

Turnberry twist: Watson, Marino lead; Woods misses cut
TURNBERRY, Scotland—Who was on base when Bobby Thomson hit his famous homer? Who doled out all those assists the night Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points? They could probably relate to Steve Marino. The unheralded former University of Virginia star got into the British Open as an alternate, had to fly his dad to Florida to send along his passport and found himself with the 36-hole lead at golf’s oldest major.

Independence Golf Club won’t take long to sort out who belongs at this weekend’s SunTrust State Open of Virginia. The course opens with a stretch of three par-4 holes, all longer than 430 yards and none of which yielded an average score of par in last year’s tournament.
