PGA Championship: No gimme for Tiger  08/16/09 12:05 AM

PGA Championship: No gimme for Tiger

Tiger Woods is one round away from winning another major, with more company than he wanted. Starting yesterday’s round with a four-shot lead, Woods played conservatively on another windy afternoon at Hazeltine until his lead was gone. Woods never has lost a major when leading, but some in the field foresee a fiercely fought final round.

PGA Championship: Tiger takes control

CHASKA, Minn.—Three players took turns sharing the lead with Tiger Woods until he stood alone at the PGA Championship. The final hour at Hazeltine changed everything. Woods fired off three consecutive birdies, which began with a drive onto the fringe of the 299-yard 14th hole and ended with Woods nodding his head and dangling his tongue out of the side of his mouth after making a 20-footer.

PGA: Great beginning for Woods

CHASKA, Minn.—Tiger Woods was twirling his clubs, not tossing them at his bag in disgust. Putts that grazed the edge of the hole and caused him so much angst were for birdie, not par or worse. Woods had no complaints yesterday after the first round of the PGA Championship. The only concerns might come from the guys chasing him.

Players parry pressure while chasing LPGA opportunities  08/14/09 12:06 AM

Angela Buzminski has been in this position before. And she has learned from experience that the best way to deal with late-season pressure on the Duramed Futures Tour is to ignore it. Buzminski sits in sixth place on the Duramed money list heading into today’s first round of the $100,000 iMPACT Classic at Richmond Country Club. She trails the player perched in fifth place, Samantha Richdale, by just more than $4,000.

The buzz word at Hazeltine is length

CHASKA, Minn. (AP)—Paul Azinger pulled the driver from his bag because there really is no other option at Hazeltine. The sign post on the opening hole has two words and two sets of numbers that serve as a not-so-subtle welcome to the PGA Championship.

Turnberry twist: Watson, Marino lead; Woods misses cut

TURNBERRY, Scotland—Who was on base when Bobby Thomson hit his famous homer? Who doled out all those assists the night Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points? They could probably relate to Steve Marino. The unheralded former University of Virginia star got into the British Open as an alternate, had to fly his dad to Florida to send along his passport and found himself with the 36-hole lead at golf’s oldest major.

British Open notes: For Calcavecchia’s wife, it’s in the bag  07/18/09 12:01 AM

TURNBERY, Scotland—Mark Calcavecchia’s wife, Brenda, is his caddie for the week. That’s nothing new. She has carried his bag occasionally since they first started dating in 2001, and she was his caddie the weekend before they got married in Italy. Calcavecchia counts two victories with Brenda on the bag—the Maekyung Open and the Shark Shootout.

SunTrust State Open: Trying to stay on course  07/15/09 12:01 AM

Independence Golf Club won’t take long to sort out who belongs at this weekend’s SunTrust State Open of Virginia. The course opens with a stretch of three par-4 holes, all longer than 430 yards and none of which yielded an average score of par in last year’s tournament. The next few holes provide more challenges, until the course relents.

Barnes sets 36-hole Open record; rain reappears

FARMINGDALE, N.Y.—Ricky Barnes had the best day of anyone at Bethpage Black. He had to play only nine holes. He knocked in a 45-foot birdie putt that put him in the record books with the lowest 36-hole score in U.S. Open history. He had a one-shot lead going into the third round. And he still hasn’t hit a shot in the rain. Just when the water-logged U.S. Open began to gain traction, a burst of showers halted the third round yesterday about a half-hour before Barnes and Lucas Glover, who was one shot behind, were to tee off.
