U.S. has lead going into singles
Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker were perfect as Presidents Cup partners, and they got enough help from everyone else yesterday to put the Americans in position to stay perfect on home soil. With an improbable rally by Woods in the morning and pure putting by Stricker in the afternoon, they became the first partnership in the Presidents Cup—and the first in 30 years of any team competition—to go 4-0.

U.S. unable to pull away
Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker dominate no matter what the format. Phil Mickelson wins no matter whom he has for a partner. It still isn’t enough for the Americans to pull away. For the second straight day, the Americans were poised to take a comfortable lead, but the International team just won’t back down. It rallied to win two late matches to split the fourballs session.

Turnabout at 18 deflates Americans at Presidents Cup
One putt changed everything except the lead yesterday in the Presidents Cup. The Americans were poised to seize control in the opening session of foursomes at Harding Park, already assured of the lead and on the verge of winning the final match for a two-point advantage. Justin Leonard had a 3-foot birdie putt to win—a putt he first thought had been conceded—and was stunned when the putt caught the right edge of the cup and spun away.

Giles wins U.S. Senior Amateur
Vinny Giles dancing gleefully around the 18th green after sinking a putt is an unlikely image of Virginia’s greatest amateur golfer. That is what the 66-year-old from Richmond did after his 18-foot, downhill birdie attempt found the cup and gave him a 1-up victory over John Grace, 61, of Fort Worth, Texas, in the final of the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship at Beverly Country Club in Chicago.
