‘Other’ teams also in action  11/20/09 12:01 AM

The first-string defense for the Powhatan football team hasn’t spent much time on the field this season, especially in the second half of games. The Indians’ defense has four shutouts to its credit and has allowed just 47 points the entire year. The rub is that only one opponent finished with a winning record. The combined records of the 10 opponents is 33-64.

Goochland posts shutout  11/14/09 12:01 AM

CHARLOTTESVILLE - Goochland High School used a stingy defense and explosive ground game last night to dispatch Millbrook 21-0 in a Group AA, Region II, Division 3 quarterfinal game last night. The contest was played at Monticello High School because of wet field conditions at Goochland. Goochland was able to move the ball effectively on Monticello’s Field Turf and its defense came up with a fourth-quarter goal-line stand that helped preserve the shutout, the team’s second consecutive.

Complete effort carries Goochland  11/07/09 12:01 AM

GOOCHLAND—Credit Goochland’s 23-0 victory over previously undefeated Western Albemarle last night to the Bulldogs’ relentless defense. And their smash-mouth running game. And their thorough preparation, their desire, and their steadfast refusal to be intimidated by adversity. “The kids bought into our plan,“ defensive coordinator Dan Summitt said. “They understood it. They came out and executed. They did a wonderful job.“

Goochland takes a stand with red-zone defense

GOOCHLAND—The mere thought of staring down a formidable opponent in the red zone can strike fear in the hearts of even the staunchest defenders. Not at Goochland, though. In fact, the big guys who suit up in the Bulldogs’ 3-5-3 alignment live for just those situations. “It makes us crazy,“ said Austin Jordan, a 6-0, 230-pound senior who anchors the front three.
