Dominion rivals to vie in state final  11/19/09 12:01 AM

The Cosby boys volleyball team’s Achilles’ heel this season has been an inability to handle adversity in some big matches. Get down, they’re out. Great Bridge of Chesapeake had the Titans backpedaling last night in the semifinals of the Virginia High School League Group AAA tournament at the Siegel Center. Cosby won the first two games, but the unbeaten Wildcats won the third and fourth sets and served for the match in Game 5.

Wet weather rearranges Group AAA playoff schedules  06/05/09 12:01 AM

Enough of this rain, already. Rain has plagued high school sports all spring, and now it has thrown the Virginia High School League Group AAA baseball, softball and soccer tournaments at Westfield High School in Northern Virginia for a scheduling loop. A Noah’s Ark deluge Wednesday soaked the fields at the Fairfax County high school. More rain fell yesterday and with more projected today, VHSL officials decided yesterday to move the semifinals scheduled for today to tomorrow. Championship games will be played Sunday.

Godwin boys beat Deep Run for state title  05/31/09 12:01 AM

The state champion Mills Godwin girls tennis team decided to wait for the boys team before taking its traditional victory plunge in the nearby James River. To earn their river dip yesterday, the Eagles boys had to beat Colonial District and Central Region rival Deep Run in the final of the Virginia High School League Group AAA team tournament at Huntington Park. The Eagles’ previous three state titles (2002, 2003 and 2005) had come against district and region rival Douglas Freeman.

Princess Anne ousts Cosby in Group AAA girls semifinal  03/12/09 12:01 AM

With more power than grace, Jazmin Pitts came down the edge of the court, driving for the basket. Cosby’s big center doesn’t often take the ball baseline to baseline, but with her Titans trailing Princess Anne by five in a Group AAA semifinal, she snatched the rebound from a missed one-and-one and headed for home. Elizabeth Williams, the Cavaliers’ 6-3 sophomore, met her under the Cosby basket. In a collision of four-foul carrying big players, Williams spilled onto the hardwood. Pitts dumped in the layup that would have cut the deficit to three.

Wann, Cosby too much for T.C. Williams  03/07/09 1:01 AM

Wann, Cosby too much for T.C. Williams

As she crossed halfcourt, dropping back into defense, Becca Wann clenched her fists down low by her sides and flexed—just a little bit. Just under eight minutes into the Group AAA quarterfinals, the Cosby junior already felt good. Her 3-point shot had been a little off the past few games, but with 9 seconds left in the first quarter, she was good on her second consecutive attempt.

The Central Region basketball tournament championship games originally were scheduled to be played Monday. That meant Petersburg and John Marshall had either four or five days before play commenced in the Virginia High School League state tournament depending on which team won and lost. Then it snowed. The title games were played Wednesday night. Petersburg (29-0) won 68-58 and earned the right to play tonight against Northern Region runner-up Hayfield (21-7). Game time is 8:45 p.m. at the Siegel Center.
