MEAC preview  09/03/09 12:01 AM

Hampton University seeks stability at the top of its football program. HU this season will have its third coach in three years. From 1992-2007, the Pirates went 136-48-1 and made five Division I-AA playoff appearances under coach Joe Taylor. In a curious move, Taylor switched from Hampton to Florida A&M, another Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference member.

Hampton University skinny  09/03/09 12:01 AM

2008 records: 5-3 MEAC, 6-5
Offense: Junior QB Herbert Bynes set school records for passing yards (2,713), total offense (2,616 yards) and completions (199) last season in his first year as a starter. Rose has indicated he would like the Pirates to get back to the running game that served them so well in previous seasons. So look for more of LaMarcus Coker, the 5-10, 195-pound Tennessee transfer who gained 612 yards in nine Hampton games last year. HU may also be leaning on the run more because it lost its top three receivers from last season (Jeremy Gilchrist, Justin Brown, Kevin Teel). Florida State transfer Damon McDaniel will perk up Hampton’s receiving group.
