Petersburg Third-grade students at Walnut Hill Elementary School, 300 W. South Blvd., will perform a holiday play, “The Incredible Reindeer,“ on Tuesday at the school. Performances will be at 2:20 p.m. and 6 p.m. Henrico Marching bands from Highland Springs and Henrico high schools excelled at the Asymmetrix Entertainment National High Stepping Marching Band Competition held recently at North Carolina A&T University. The Highland Springs Marching Battalion placed second overall, and the Henrico Warrior Band won third place.

Richmond questions proposed transit authority
Richmond political leaders last night had tough questions about a proposed new regional authority that would have the power to raise taxes to meet the area’s long-term transportation needs. Mayor L. Douglas Wilder and several City Council members, at an unusual joint meeting to hear a presentation on the new authority, said they are concerned that the new authority seems to have little focus on mass transit.

41 people take citizenship oath at Patrick Henry’s home
Anna Pergiotis arrived in the United States 41 years ago from Greece, grew up and raised a family. Yesterday, hers was the first name called as a new citizen of this country in a naturalization ceremony at Scotchtown, Patrick Henry’s home in Ashland. “I should have done it years ago,“ Pergiotis said afterward. “It feels better.“

Hanover teens face explosives counts
Two Hanover County teens have been charged with making plastic-bottle bombs that exploded the evening of Sept. 11 outside two Mechanicsville-area high schools. The teens, 15 and 16, each were charged with two counts of manufacturing, possessing and using explosive materials and one county of conspiracy in separate incidents that occurred at Lee-Davis High School and Hanover High School during junior varsity football games, according to the Hanover Sheriff’s Office.

Ashland to celebrate its 150th birthday Oct. 18
Ashland is 150 years old this year, and everyone is invited to celebrate with the town Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008, on the campus of Randolph-Macon College. This is a free family-friendly, rain-or-shine event. Please, no dogs. The activities begin at 12:30 p.m. with the All-Hanover County Schools Marching Band on Day Football Field. The Opening Ceremony continues from 1 to 2 p.m. with guest speakers, the unveiling of the birthday cake sculpture and time capsule, music and birthday wishes. Afterward, everyone can have birthday cake by the fountain.

Speaker series to feature talk on Civil War book
The Special Speakers Series at Pamunkey Regional Library in Ashland will feature Dr. Ritchie Watson, author of the new book "Normans and Saxons: Southern Race Mythology and the Intellectual History of the American Civil War," on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008, at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served at the event, which is sponsored by the Friends of the Ashland Library.
Holiday art and craft show at the Montpelier Center
The Montpelier Center for Arts & Education will host a Holiday Art and Craft Show on Friday, Nov. 21, 2008, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The show will feature all handmade items and will include artwork from the Montpelier Center's art students as well as several local artists. Admission is free. The center is at 17205 Mountain Road, at Route 33 and Clazemont Road in the village of Montpelier.

Gypsy Roots to perform at Montpelier Center
The Gypsy Roots jazz band will perform at the Montpelier Center's Music Under the Stars free concert Friday, Sept. 19, 2008. This concert will be held on the lawn of the center, 17205 Mountain Road, Montpelier, Va., (it will be moved indoors in the event of rain). Seating starts at 6 p.m.; music begins at 6:30 p.m. Food from B Blues BBQ along with beer, wine and other beverages will be available for purchase, or you bring your own picnic dinner. Outside alcohol is prohibited.
