Crawford convicted in boy’s ‘80 killing  12/06/08 12:01 AM

For 28 years, Diane Glanz has kept close the ashes of her murdered 6-year-old son, and close to her heart the hope his killer would be found and convicted. Yesterday as a jury filed into a Hanover County courtroom, the news that the panel had reached a verdict broke the precedent of two prior deadlocked juries. Glanz wept uncontrollably just at the sight of the six women and six men approaching their seats. And as friends crouched by her side and hugged the now 60-year-old woman, the jury’s findings sparked a broad smile and thumbs-up signals from her.

Tasked with reaching a conclusion in a case that stumped two prior juries and lacks DNA evidence, fingerprints or a witness, jurors spent two hours and fifteen minutes yesterday assessing the testimony before being excused for the night.

Fish Co. more than just a meal  12/04/08 12:01 AM

Fish Co. more than just a meal

I don’t hunt. I don’t fish. I don’t wear camo. And I don’t normally frequent chain restaurants.  But Islamorada Fish Company? That’s a different story.  I’m almost embarrassed at the degree to which I feel the need to rave about the Islamorada experience.  I call it an experience because dining here is not just a meal.

3rd trial starts for boy’s accused killer  12/02/08 12:01 AM

John Bradley Crawford is no longer the 19-year-old he was in December 1980. That’s when, authorities say, he abducted a 6-year-old Highland Springs boy just home from school, carried him off to Hanover County, molested him and left him to die. A hunter found the lifeless, scarred body of Alexander Paul Glanz three days later, Dec. 6, tied at the wrists and ankles and with only underwear and socks to ward off the cold.

Caroline To help compensate for a $2.7 million shortfall in budget projections, the Caroline County Board of Supervisors has asked for 15 percent cuts in most county operations. The cuts will include schools, but not at the full 15 percent rate because that would push the county below the state’s minimum level of school funding. An exact cut in school funding is still under discussion. The county has also imposed a hiring freeze and is prepared to put off capital purchases until after 2010.
