Football: Hanover 34, Henrico 14  11/06/09 10:46 PM

Sam Rogers had 15 rushes for 99 yards and a touchdown and tacked on another pair of scores on 82-yards passing as Hanover beat Henrico (1-5, 2-7) in a Central District matchup. Rogers connected with Danny Trsic on TD passes of 6 and 17 yards, and Deane Cheatham punched in a 1-yard run for a score, and another from 4 yards out for the Hawks (3-2, 6-3).

Quentin Moore and the top-seeded Springers were too much for the Hawks in the Capital District semifinals. Moore finished with 12 kills and six aces. Hanover bounced back from a first-game defeat to sweep the next three from Lee-Davis in the Capital District tournament semifinals. Hanover, the No. 2 seed, go 13 kills and 13 digs from Ryane Majewski and 27 assists from Mallory Moore. The third-seeded Confederates were led by Jessie Cappello, who had 23 digs and two aces. Football: Hanover 28, Atlee 7  10/30/09 10:00 PM

Sam Rogers passed for 106 yards on 17 attempts and a TD, and was 7 of 16 for 92 yards and a score and the Hawks defeated the Raiders in a Capital District meeting. Dean Cheatham totaled 154 yards rushing on 21 attempts with a touchdown for Hanover (2-2, 5-3). Josh Doggett paced the defense for Atlee (2-2, 5-3) with 17 tackles, five assists and one sack. David Ratchford finished with eight punts for 299 yards, a touchback and two inside the 20.

Football: Hanover 26, Monacan 21  10/23/09 10:54 PM

Hanover QB Sam Rogers completed 9 of 14 passes for 141 yards, throwing a touchdown and an interception in Hanover’s (4-3) victory over Monacan (3-4). Monacan QB Logan Staib was 14 for 30 for 148 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also rushed 15 times for 39 yards and a TD. On defense, he had six tackles, a pass break up and a blocked punt.

High school football notes  10/22/09 12:01 AM

A healthier Trey Johnson ran his way into the Varina football record book last week against Atlee. Johnson, a 5-10, 175-pounder who led the Central Region in rushing last year as a junior, logged 330 yards on 19 carries in the Blue Devils’ 35-12 victory. The previous mark was 272 by Lamont Abrams in the Central Region, Division 6 championship game in 1999.

Cheatham’s 4 TDs help Hanover slip by Lee-Davis  10/17/09 12:01 AM

A pouring rain did little to dampen the offensive fireworks between two teams desperately in need of a victory. But by the fourth quarter, it was Hanover High’s Deane Cheatham carrying the pile, and his team, to a 40-38 victory against visiting Lee-Davis. Cheatham finished with four touchdowns and 209 all-purpose yards, doing his best to keep pace with Lee-Davis quarterback Phillip Gardner, who had four TDs along with 359 passing yards.
