Generals impose will by establishing fierce ground game

If there were questions about Dinwiddie’s versatility, the Generals answered them yesterday, pulling away to defeat visiting Hanover 34-17 in the Central Region Division 5 championship.

A defense’s challenge  11/22/08 12:01 AM

A no-huddle offense is supposed to not only rattle the defense, but also keep the same defenders on the field without time for substitutions. But the pace of Dinwiddie’s hurry-up offense isn’t what concerns Hanover coach Josh Just most.

Preview: Hanover at Dinwiddie  11/22/08 12:01 AM

When: Today, 1 p.m.

High School Notes: Guy Davis to be honored  11/21/08 12:01 AM

Mention Guy Davis’ name to most anyone in the Richmond area high school basketball world, and the most prominent memories will be of Davis sinking the state championship winning shot for Highland Springs in 1960 and of his days coaching at Henrico. Davis retired from the Henrico County school system as activities director at Varina. He retired from administration as Trinity Episcopal’s athletic director. He returned to coaching last year at Maggie Walker Governor’s School. The Green Dragons play at Henrico at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, and Henrico is turning the visit into Guy Davis Night.

Hawks closer to crown  11/18/08 1:01 AM

The Hanover High Hawks didn’t talk about defending their Central Region, Division 5 championship the past week. That topic was off-limits - until now. Second-seeded Hanover scored 10 points before its game with Monacan was four minutes old and went on to a 24-14 victory in the region semifinals in high school’s version of Monday Night Football.

Monacan facing another road test  11/14/08 1:01 AM

As Monacan coach Danny Parsons loads up his team for a Central Region, Division 5 semifinal game at Hanover, he’s hoping the same bus ride as a year ago will end in a different destination. Last year, Hanover was preparing for its first playoff appearance in school history. The program was in its fifth year and facing Monacan in the first round of the Central Region, Division 5 tournament. The Hawks went on to win the game - 30-0 - and the region.

Area’s volleyball teams get spiked  11/12/08 1:01 AM

Area’s volleyball teams get spiked

For the first time since 2004, the state girls volleyball champion will not come from the Richmond area. Central Region champion Mills Godwin and runner-up Hanover both lost to Northern Region teams last night, ending their seasons in the state quarterfinals. The Eagles had home court against the Westfield Bulldogs, but gave up big leads in each of the first two games and were unable to recover, losing 25-21, 25-16 and 25-20.

Eagles grin and win in sweep  11/07/08 1:01 AM

When the Mills Godwin players are giving up points and start getting frustrated with each other, the bench players will yell at them to smile. That didn’t happen often last night.

Trojans repeat as champs  11/02/08 12:01 AM

Kathleen Lautzenheiser and the Midlothian girls successfully defended their Central Region title yesterday at Pole Green Park. With about a mile remaining, Lautzenheiser and teammate Amy Witt began to break away from the pack. “I think pretty much it was me and Amy the entire way,“ Lautzenheiser said. “I could hear people behind me, but I never actually saw anyone. . . . During the last mile, I kind of tried to push a little bit ahead to see if she would hang with me, I guess. And it was hot, so both of us were tired and I just happened to maybe have a little bit of a better day.“
