No.5 Varina cruises to 37-10 win  10/10/09 12:01 AM

There would be no photo finish this time. No heart-stopping final play. No overtime excitement. No drama. After four games decided by a total of 10 points, the Varina Blue Devils finally had a breather, as much of a breather, anyway, as they could have when their Capital District visitors, the Hanover Hawks, came at them with a fast-paced no-huddle offense and a fervent desire to get a signature win for their 7-year-old program.

Sixth-ranked Springers wriggle free against Hanover  10/03/09 1:20 AM

Try as Hanover might against Highland Springs, the Hawks cannot get over the hump for a victory. The Hawks outplayed the Springers last night before a homecoming crowd and drew many compliments for a stellar effort, but when the clock struck 0:00, Highland Springs was a 13-7 victor. As Springers quarterback JaQuan Burchette, a senior, said, “I like playing Hanover. We knew going in that it would be a tough ballgame. Hanover always plays hard.“

Confederates’ fourth-down gambles pay off  09/26/09 12:01 AM

Close game. Pride’s at stake. It’s fourth down. What’s the call? On the Lee-Davis sideline last night, the answer was simple. Three times in the Confederates’ 20-13 road victory over Patrick Henry before a crowd of 4,500 in the 51st renewal of the Tomato Bowl, coach Jason Meade kept his offense on the field.
