Hanover couple, facing charges involving sex with minors, held with no bond
A Hanover couple, charged with multiple felonies involving sex with minors, were being held without bond this afternoon after a prosecutor described them as a danger to the community. Craig M. Linnon, 49, and his wife, Angela, 44, who were suspended from their jobs with the Hanover County school system after their arrests last week, face a preliminary hearings Feb. 11, Hanover Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Judge Larry E. Gilman ordered this afternoon.

School Locked Down During Suspect Chase
Glen Lea Elementary School was placed on lockdown in Henrico County this afternoon when a wanted suspect fled police in the area. Henrico authorities took Aaron Hopkins into custody this afternoon after he fled Hanover and Henrico police in the area of U.S. Route 360 and Laburnum Avenue. Hopkins was wanted on outstanding warrants in Chesterfield, Richmond and Hampton.
Burkhead gets 10 years in girlfriend’s death
Derek Edward Burkhead will serve 10 years in prison for the manslaughter death of his longtime girlfriend, the mother of his 6-year-old son. Hanover County Circuit Judge J. Overton Harris this afternoon rejected pleas from Burkhead and his lawyer that he receive significant suspended time in a case of accidental shooting that followed a night of drinking.

Local governments to pitch agenda at session Wednesday
Representatives of the Richmond Regional Planning District Commission on Wednesday will present their legislative agenda to lawmakers a week ahead of the General Assembly session. The commission’s board represents Richmond, the town of Ashland and seven counties—Charles City, Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, New Kent and Powhatan.

Cox, owner of a trucking company, succeeds Hargrove next month. The Richmond area will lose a lot of experience when Hargrove steps down on Jan. 13 after 28 years in the House of Delegates.

Judge rejects appeals in 1980 slaying
All grounds of appeal in the 29-year-old murder of a 6-year-old Highland Springs boy have been turned aside by a state Court of Appeals judge. But the attorney for convicted killer John Bradley Crawford said the rejection represents only the beginning of an appeal process that could last many more months. W. Edward Riley IV, Crawford’s lawyer, said this week that he will seek a review of the case before a three-judge panel of the court within the next two weeks.

Jury convicts Hanover man of involuntary manslaughter
A Hanover County man once facing life in prison on a charge of murdering his longtime girlfriend will serve no more than 10 years. A Hanover jury last night found Derek E. Burkhead, 26, guilty of involuntary manslaughter after a two-day trial. When the verdict from the eight-woman, four-man jury was read at 9:20 last night, Burkhead appeared numb and speechless. Another jury eight months ago found him guilty of second-degree murder in the same case and recommended a 25-year sentence. That verdict was stricken because of a procedural error, resulting in the third mistrial of the case.

Hanover man’s murder trial begins yet again
Derek Edward Burkhead’s road to innocence or prison has been stymied by fainting spells, three mistrials and, yesterday, by an early morning jail cell fight. But the murder defendant appeared for trial yesterday with a swollen jaw, a new defense lawyer and a renewed plea of not guilty. “He says he’s ready to proceed,“ attorney John Honey said of his client yesterday morning before a clerk asked for Burkhead’s pleas to a second-degree murder charge and felony use of a firearm.

Suspect in Hanover ax attack is held without bond
A Lee-Davis High School student surrendered without resistance to Hanover County authorities last week as a classmate lay a few feet away, severely injured from an ax attack that sloughed off the side of the victim’s face. The youth charged in the attack, Omar K. Abdelaal, who turned 16 this month, was ordered held without bond yesterday after a prosecutor told a juvenile court judge that Abdelaal “represents a threat to the community.“

Lee-Davis High student charged in ax attack against schoolmate
A Lee-Davis High School student faces possible life in prison if convicted of an ax attack on a fellow student. Hanover Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramon E. “Trip” Chalkley declined yesterday to identify the 15-year-old, who is charged with aggravated malicious wounding in the incident. But he said he intends to try the youth as an adult and will seek to have the case transferred to Circuit Court.

Burglary ringleader from Henrico sentenced to two years
A burglary ring that recruited juveniles and preyed on well-to-do, quiet neighborhoods in Hanover and Henrico counties has run its course. A Henrico judge sentenced the leader of the loosely knit operation to two years in prison Tuesday after hearing Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Nikki Clarke describe how that leader looted and broke into the home of a vacationing school friend.
