Blue Devils dial up defense
Last night’s game looked a lot like a Varina practice—plenty of defense, then a little bit of offense at the end. It was a winning formula for the Blue Devils, who beat the Henrico Warriors 58-46 in the Capital District game.

Girls: Hanover 55, No. 6 Henrico 50
Chelsea Coward led all scorers with 27 points to go along with 11 rebounds and three steals in Hanover’s victory over No. 6 Henrico in a Capital District matchup. Amanda Woolard had 12 points and six rebounds and Kim Browning pulled down 12 boards for the Hawks. Ashle Freeman and Bria Harris scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Warriors.

Atlee foils Henrico to keep Capital lead
With little depth to lean on, Atlee’s starting lineup held on to a slim lead last night, fighting off injury and foul trouble to sink Henrico 68-64 and maintained control of the top spot in the Capital District girls basketball race.

Elaine Derricott had 19 points and 15 rebounds for a double-double to go along with four steals and four blocks as No. 7 Henrico defeated eighth-ranked Deep Run. Jamia Cox (12) and Bria Harris (11) also scored in double figures for the Warriors, while Shanell Dowling had 10 rebounds and Bria Robinson added 10 assists. Amy Turner led the Wildcats with 17 points.

Henrico sophomore follows father but has own specialties

Henrico sophomore Trey Davis has been offered a scholarship to play basketball at the University of Richmond. His father, John, played there (1983-86). Like father, like son . . . well, sort of. Girls: Henrico 78, J.R. Tucker 61
Shanell Dowling scored 20 points, 12 of them in the second quarter, and two other players reached double figures as the eighth-ranked Warriors held off the Tigers to win the Winter Break tournament championship at Varina. Dowling also totaled 10 rebounds, four steals and four assists, and was named to the all-tournament team along with Elaine Derricott, who racked up 15 rebounds, four blocks, four steals and an assist to go with her 15 points. Jamia Cox added four assists and two steals for Henrico.
